Singapore is a small country with a good public transportation system, but you mention Pasir Ris to someone living on the other end of the island; chances are high you would receive a loud, resounding reply: "so far"!

I live in the North, slightly better in terms of distance, but even I find it tiring to travel to Pasir Ris. Nevertheless, I am willing to travel for food and that's the reason for my visit to Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre.

Opened in 2018, this is the first hawker centre for the town that was established in 1983, and featured a modest 42 stalls across two floors. Location wise, it's just a short 400 to 500-meter walk from Pasir Ris MRT station.

A few friends had informed that the second level had better and interesting fare and I agreed as the stalls on the ground floor were similar to what you can find in most hawker centres / coffee shops and nothing really attracted my attention, especially when there was also a lack of queue.

Reimondo Seafood Congee would definitely catch your eye; that humongous signboard with Japanese characters that you would automatically classify the stall as one offering Japanese cuisine, until your eyes veer towards the English and Chinese words.

Since seafood congee is its namesake, let's order a bowl. At first glance, I was a tad disappointed as the S$6.90 congee looked nothing like the picture in front of the stall, although consistency wise, it would fall under the popular Cantonese style renowned for its silky smoothness.

Things started to unravel as I stirred up the content and scooped up one spoonful for a taste. Unlike typical Chinese congee, the flavor was unusual as it reminded me of Japanese miso soup. Two words; super nice!

Tucked within the congee included two fresh prawns and two scallops and bites of smoked salmon which not only gave a twist to the texture in every mouthful but also elevated the flavor. The porridge was supposed to be famous for its wok-hei but I personally think it has yet to reach the level of the stir fried porridge from old world.

Nonetheless, it was enjoyable and we relished every single bite. Alex loved it so much; he went down again a week later with his friend. And this came from a person who typically doesn't travel for food.
