In coffee shops and hawker centres around Singapore, the duck you get would either be roast or braised. But recently, I noticed a video feed that kept promoting a peking duck from a coffee shop in Ang Mo Kio; Tham's Roasted Delights at Food Haus.
Since my sister and I were scheduled for hair treatment at Bee Choo Origins at Ang Mo Kio; we decided to check out the food stall, together with my mom!
In addition to peking ducks, you would find other roasted delights like roast pork, char siew and even steamed chicken! Good for me as I like some variety in my diet. :P
Furthermore, you can top up S$1 for soup of the day! Now, this is quite tricky as sometimes, the soup of the day wasn't really up to expectations, and in the worst case scenario; maybe slightly better than the complimentary soup dispensed at most roast delights stalls.
Well, never try never know!
At S$1 a bowl; it's worth a try for first-timer.
Soup of the Day - honestly worth it with so much ingredients for the lotus soup! However, taste was much blander compared it to Qi Le Boneless Chicken Rice; and the latter dispensed the soup for free without the top-up.
Char Siew - now, this was sweet, and not the smoky, caramelized sweetness I prefer, although it's better than char siew without the saccharine tinge. The fattier cut was better-tasting for obvious reasons, and some parts were also pretty charred, which I quite enjoy.
Peking Duck - just like in a proper Chinese restaurant, the peking duck you purchased would be pushed right next to your table and sliced right in front of you! Now, that's some kind of service you don't get to see in coffee shops / hawker centres!
Our turn now.
Half a Peking duck!
Here's the eventual setup; with sliced Peking duck skin on a bed of crackers, with a serving of thin egg pancakes, sweet sauce, cut cucumbers and julienned scallions.
Let's wrap and indulge! They didn't disappoint with a crispness that complemented the rest of the ingredients. Using egg pancake was novel though and good for someone who dislikes ingesting more carbohydrates! One suggestion I have was that the the skin should have been sliced into smaller pieces as each piece was a tad too large.
So skin was passed to us. How about the meat?! Rest assured that they will be served separately on a plate, without most of the skin! From some of the social media posts, I gathered that you could also pay extra to have them prepared into a roast duck noodle, for example.
Chopped into satisfyingly thick cuts, the duck meat was surprisingly juicy without the tarty dryness that was the usual feature for most duck meat. Only thing was the meat was a little bit salty; which can be effectively addressed if you eat them with plain white rice.
For S$27 for half a Peking duck though, I am sure not complaining!
p.s. there's even a black truffle roast duck on the menu that costs $2 more than the Peking Duck. My curiosity was piqued yet the challenge I faced was the requirement to pre-order one day in advance since I have the tendency to change my mind, depending on the craving I have.
