The Better Scoop - Handcrafted Ice Cream and Beverages opposite Sembawang Shopping Centre [Singapore]

The immediate area surrounding Sembawang Shopping Centre is familiar ground for my family even though it was a 10-15 minute bus ride from where we stay. Coincidentally, I took up employment at the mall before; first at KFC and then Shop N Save supermarket when I was a teenager.

Unlike then, the area nowadays has a lot more eateries and while there is Bukit Panjang Dessert, I recently found out there's another dessert place; The Better Scoop! Yet another ice cream / gelato review but at least it's not in Yishun this time.

Seating available in both indoors and outdoors.

Simple yet soothing interior design, with plants added for a more therapeutic atmosphere, which I think is important given that we usually associate desserts with sweet happiness and it's a perfect remedy to counter a bad day.

Flavors wise; there were 12 in total and I did notice a few interesting tea-based tie ones. For example, chrysanthemum goji berries, tie guanyin, honey chamomile and the more common, earl grey lavender.

Pei Pa Koa Latte with Peach Gum - the traditional herbal syrup is my favorite remedy whenever I face a situation of cough / sore throat and to have it in latte would be a first for me although I often mix it with plain water for a refreshing beverage whenever the weather is hot!

That unmistakably minty, herbal taste of the pei pa koa surprisingly matched perfectly with the cold milk! Latte contains coffee? Because there didn't seem to be any coffee taste in the beverage. I don't understand the use of peach gum; it's pricey and honestly; didn't contribute to an elevation of flavor.

Classic Waffle; topped with two scoops of ice cream. Honey Chamomile with Butterfly Pea Flowers and Tie Guan Yin (didn't know it's called Iron Buddha Tea in English); chosen mainly because I was with my elderly parents.

Tie Guan Yin - sweetness was managed for this ice cream but the main worry when using tea, especially Chinese tea, is that the taste could be be a tad astringent. Honey Chamomile with Butterfly Pea Flowers - vanilla based with strong infusion of the chamomile aroma, and you will bite into bits of the miniscule flowers!

Freshly Baked Waffle -
 baked dough had a thin layer of crisp but flavor was lacking, with a tinge of bitterness that could only be countered with the sweetness from the ice cream. There's an unusual nian gao waffle; maybe next time.

=====

Given the lack of a proper ice cream parlor in the area, I think The Better Scoop is in a great location although they might require more publicity as the shopfront, despite facing the main road, is blocked by some trees.
