Living in a kampong (village) when I was young allowed me opportunities to experience things that kids nowadays could never imagine; one of which was to make our own love letters using charcoal before lunar new year!
Hence, when I read that there was still a shop in Penang making love letters the traditional way; I decided to check it out so that I can rekindle some childhood memories.
Sadly, they were already sold out at 4.30pm! Turned out it was recommended to pre-order and since we had a few more days in Penang, we decided to do so and collect on the last day, before flying back to Singapore.
First thing to do before deciding how many to buy; sampling! One thing to note; the love letter is more e a Singaporean term although Chinese generally calls them kueh nen kng (egg rolls). In Malaysia, they are known as kueh kapit.
Traditional Kuih Kapit - to be honest, this shape was the modern form as the traditional shape was more a roll-up, like cigar! Nevertheless, it was crisp, tasted light with a most wonderful flavour reminiscent of my childhood!
Puffed Kuih Kapit - there's also a puff up version which I initially thought would be just a waste of space for the container as so much air would be in the middle.
Turned out it was just filled with pork floss! While this means a higher pricing, I must say the addition of pork floss made the simple snack overly luxurious, and much less addictive. One was enough for me!
Returned a few days later to see the experts in operation, making love letters the way I remember, using charcoals but with way more molds and also looking comfortable on the stools! In the past, we had to make do with lower stools that were back breaking!
The aroma was so enticing!
p.s. we indulged in a few freshly made pieces!
Alex having a great conversation with the lady boss who commented that it's hard to find a successor for the business! Rest assured that Alex wouldn't be the correct candidate; he doesn't exhibit the required commitment, tenacity and discipline.
Rows of containers for collection! These would be the bigger ones, which cost RM 38 for the Traditional Kuih Kapit and RM 52 for the Puffed Kuih Kapit.
