Even though I would classify myself as a Buddhist, I am not religious and hence, when I was asked about the provision of prayer room at my workplace in the past, I find it puzzling as Singapore recognizes 10 religions and given how land scarce we are; would we need to cater one prayer room for each religion!?
Usually, prayer rooms are built for our Muslim friends but when I was at Taoyuan International Airport last December, the above area caught my attention. A professional prayer room that caters to three different religions, as per the three religious symbols.
Beautifully designed, I can't help but step in for a closer look! And also to take some photographs for colleagues for their information, in case our workplace can replicate something similar.
First up, the room for the Muslims; with prayer mats strewn over and even a moveable partition, likely to separate the males and females. In Muslim countries, there are gender specific prayer rooms.
Second, the one for Christians / Catholics, as evidenced by the huge cross on the wall. Unlike the prayer room for Muslims, there were just two benches where devotees can sit and pray.
Lastly, for the Buddhists; an altar with a statue of a Bodhisattva and a stack of straw cushion mats on a raised platform, where devotees can lay out and pray / meditate.
