Local Taiwanese Breakfast from 朝柴JhaoChai肉蛋吐司 @ Taipei (Shandao Temple MRT Station Exit 5)

No matter what you crave for, what you plan to eat, life throws the occasional spanner and mess up your day. That's what I felt when I was so hooked on wanting to try Fuhang Soy Milk at Taipei, only to find out it was closed on Mondays.

Well, life has also taught me to check for nearby alternatives and JhaoChai, with local Taiwanese breakfast sandwich, stood out for its pretty decent reviews.

I have had experiences with Taiwanese breakfast sandwiches in Singapore; e.g. Fong Sheng Hao (豐盛號)True Breakfast (初早餐), and I was more than excited to try them right here in their place of origin, Taiwan!

There were other items like hot plate noodles if you prefer something substantial, and even a burger option if you are not into traditional toasts.

Digital menu on the screen; I have a basic grasp of traditional Chinese characters (thanks to all the comic books I used to devour) and can understand most of the words. However, there's also a paper menu with English translation.

Remember to clear your tables after use!

Why using disposables when I am dining in!? Even though I am all for sustainability, I do empathize the pains that companies face, especially the burden on financials to have manpower to wash and clean the utensils, when it's much easier for customers to trash the disposable packaging.

Hot Soy Milk - not bad, a pretty rich and thick soya flavor with a manageable sweetness. Just so you know, I usually got for soya milk with no sugar / syrup as I love to immerse in the original flavor of soy. This was above average.

Black Milk Tea - as the birth country of bubble tea, I must say I have yet to have a bad tasting milk tea in Taiwan! All were above average (this was soothingly nice with a strong tea flavor); maybe I have to thanks my lucky stars!

Signature Pork and Egg Sandwich - it seemed like this version is the designated signature for any traditional Taiwanese breakfast sandwich shop.

As expected, there was the thin meat patty featuring a sweet, addictive marination (store recipe) that complemented perfectly with the lightly toasted bread and an egg; such a simple combination yet so delicious! Okay, maybe not so thin, as the second picture shows!

Chinese Omelete with Cheese
- this reminded me of roti prata in Singapore, rolled up with cheese but less crispy, more doughy texture. On a cool morning, this hot breakfast comforted the soul although my affection still lies with the 'sandwich'.

Beef with Cheese and Peanut Butter - Think I was done?! No way! I was so happy with the sandwich that I got another one so that I can happily indulge in bites of it when I was on the plane!

Got a beef one and I totally love the taste of peanut butter! Beef wasn't as good as pork but honestly, the peanut butter was the deal sealer! I am so going to seek out Taiwanese traditional sandwich in January 2025!
