Jae Wan Thai Dessert near Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok [Thailand]

When one was bored during the closure of international borders amidst the pandemic and missed Bangkok, his favorite city, terribly, one would go online and research on places to visit once borders reopened.

One of those places was Jae Wan, a Thai local dessert store near the top university in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University! I didn't manage to visit on my first trip to Bangkok after a two-year hiatus but I managed to, after a heavy meal at the incredibly popular Jeh O Chula.

While the line was shorter than Jeh O Chula, I am still surprised by it as Jae Wan was a dessert place where people usually ask for takeaway and wouldn't linger too long even if they were having the desserts on site.

Nevertheless, we joined the queue since it was so appropriate to have desserts after meal, and I had already intended to check out Jae Wan anyway.

Finally seated after a wait of close to 25 minutes! Menu (sharing towards the end of the post) was in Thai, English and Chinese but the order list was a bit too small for us to write, and the desserts had no item number! Hence, we passed the ordering to our Thai friend for help!

As the distinguished alumni of Thailand's top university, our Thai friend was no stranger to the dessert store and explained Jae / Jay / Jeh actually refers to aunties of Chinese descent, and a number of famous eateries in Bangkok are named after aunties who own / operate the business.

Segregated according to fresh milk, iced, ginger juice, cold soy milk and hot soy milk desserts, we opted for soy milk, and iced dessert series. Above would be the soy milk with pudding and iced assorted beans in longan juice.

Soy Milk with Pudding - it's like those beancurd jelly we can get in Singapore although in this case, they would drench it with more soy milk. Similar to Nam Dao Huu, there's this burnt aftertaste that was a bit hard to stomach for our taste buds.

Iced Assorted Beans in Longan Juice - I would say this would fall under the category of my favorite Singapore local dessert; cheng tng! However, this had a lot more ingredients whereas in Singapore context, we would have more ice than anything else.

Another thing to note is the the sugar level was also much higher; not unexpected in Thailand given the elevated tolerance for sweet stuff. p.s. frankly too many beans!

Aftermath; given the leftovers, my family wasn't that impressed since we did queue a while for seats. To them, the nice snack corner at Yishun central would be preferred.
