I stayed at Crystal Crown Hotel with my mom last year, and noticed a home-based durian store on my short walk to KSL shopping mall. Sadly, we didn't manage to step in then although I made a mental note to do so in my next visit!
And I finally did yesterday night despite going in to Johor Bahru almost every month! Whatever the case, it was after a sumptuous wanton mee meal at the nearby 世纪住家云吞面 and we thought "fruits" would be beneficial for digestion.
Three types of durians were available; the black thorn, red prawn and in interesting red apple. At my age, I believe in going for the best so that we can indulge the most enjoyable from the unavoidable calorie intake. So, the RM 88 (about S$27) per kilogram black thorn durian it shall be.
It seemed that durian vendors in Malaysia are justifying their high durian prices with nicer display, and providing tissues, gloves and even cups of iced water!
Now our black thorn durian, which weighed about 1.6 kilograms and priced at RM 142 (about $43). Want to guess how many seeds in total? I shall answer now; a paltry five seeds! Now, the number of seeds will not matter so long the pulp was heavenly.
My verdict is that the pulp was creamy and tasted slightly bitter; texture was bit dry on the outside yet the mushy insides stick to my fingers, and the seeds were relatively large. Taste and aroma wise, I just had black thorn durian at Xiao Hei, in Singapore, on Wednesday, and this one at David paled in comparison. And Xiao Hei price was only a dollar more expensive at S$28!
While disappointed, I must admit that the complimentary serving of cut pineapple made me slightly happier! They were juicy and more sweet than sour!
The name of the store is "David's Wholesale Fruit Supply" and as the name implies, there were other fruits on sale, including mangosteen, pineapples, watermelons, coconuts, avocados and salak; latter of which was known as snake skin fruit in Chinese.
