From Google Maps, I noticed a fried chicken restaurant at Johor Bahru that had a high review score of 4.7 from 500 reviewers; this piqued my interest given my deep love for deep fried chicken!
But my GRAB ride brought me to a different yet similarly named eatery; from Wallace to AllAce Burger & Chicken. Turned out there was a rebranding exercise although I found it strange since Wallace was supposedly a pretty famous fast food brand from China and usually, the main franchiser wouldn't consider a change of name.
Well, history and business differences aside, I am not going to spend time sourcing for another eatery for lunch! It didn't help as well that the time was almost 3pm and my only meal that day was just a small bowl of beancurd!
While burger was another of their signature, we opted to focus on chicken; the royale crispy chicken combo with fries and drink, and a roasted quarter leg.
Roasted Quarter Leg - the picture reminded me of the roasted chicken once offered by KFC around twenty years ago and I remember how memorable they were; to the extend I would go for roast instead of fried chicken!
Sadly, this didn't bring me down memory lane; the herbs and spices used didn't stand out and this felt more like your usual grilled chicken wings found in Singapore's hawker centres. Edible, and not exceptional.
Royale Crispy Chicken Combo - let' start with the french fries first, which was the only kind of potato product that I like. They were crisp yet the insides were dry without the addictiveness I would have usually associated with fries; likely frozen and overcooked.
We were most surprised by the fried chicken as we assumed it would be just two pieces. Turned out there were three pieces and this combo cost just RM 18.90, under S$6.00!
One piece was even a quarter leg! In Singapore KFC, this would have been separated into drumstick and thigh! Anyway, one about Wallace / AllAce Burger & Chicken; the chickens are freshly fried and waiting time is a must at about 15-20 minutes!
Even though chicken used was frozen (evidenced by the dark-colored bones), the meat of the chicken parts was exhibiting piping hot juiciness and easily fell off from the bones! Batter was crunchy good and the skin didn't seem overly fatty.
Admittedly, the meat tasted pretty normal although nothing a saucer of chilli sauce can't address. I would have preferred Arnolds Chicken but for the price I am paying for; AllAce Burger & Chicken is definitely easier for my wallet!
=====
Would I be back? Of course I would should I be craving for fried chicken in Johor Bahru. However, with so many eateries waiting for us to check out, I guess it would take a while. p.s. AllAce Burger & Chicken is halal-certified!
