Loving The Biscuit King @ Casuarina Road

Digging deep into my memory, i recollected this particular scene where my late grandma used to throw me a few sticks of elongated plain biscuits to keep (active) me occupied.

Back then, television shows were crappy and limited to only a few hours a day. Children shows were non-existent, technology was pretty primitive (no iphone, no ds lite) and i was stuck in a wooden chair that didn't allow much movement.

Those old school biscuits left a deep impression as i loved the flaky crunch that came with each bite. Unfortunately, as the country advances, we are faced with an influx of many types of biscuits imported from other countries.

Soon, the traditional type we know by its distinctive bronze storage tins slowly vanished from sight, replaced by tins/packaging that are more colourful and attractive to consumers.

I am glad that all's not lost.
When i found Biscuit King.

Unlike most convenience stores that sell only a limited variety, Biscuit King has over 75 different types of traditional biscuits!

Munchers will have a great time looking through these different packs of small-sized bags for the go. Note: impulsive munchers will not 'look'; they will just grab and go!

And it's not just the carbohydrates! Preggies (my terminology for pregnant ladies) will love the extensive range of sour products to curb that naseau feeling!

Costing S$1.50 a bag, it's a buy 4 get 1 free! Damn! Hate it when retailers come out with promotions like this!

Adult kids, like myself, reminisce the old times when sweets are just sweets, each with a unique flavour of its own. It's a pity that sweets nowadays seem to veer towards flavours that were too complicated at times.

Coming back to the biscuits!! If you are a skeptical person like myself, having a large variety of biscuits does not necessarily equate to fresh biscuits of high quality with a taste (and aroma) to kill.

That's when sampling is essential to allay those fears!

For me, i find it really difficult whenever weight is used to gauge how much you want from those tins. Come on, how the hell will i know that each wafer weighs how many grams?!?! And i don't want too much; like only 20 pieces?

That's when i appreciate the business strategy Biscuit King adopts; offering ready-to-go packaging that ranges from a 300 grams sealed plastic bag to a high quality container that can withstand a few days of snacking.

So far, i have never been disappointed with the biscuits in Biscuit King (the samples are damn helpful) even though most of them are sourced from various manufacturers. Below are a few types i personally like;

Vanilla Rolls! The sweet fragrance of rich vanilla made eating this so addictive!!

Cheese Cream Biscuits! The cheesiness was not overbearing and may not go well with extreme cheese lovers. It's just right for me though.

Jewel Biscuits! When i was young, i enjoyed biting the brightly coloured sugary topping off the boring, carbo bottom! And it's wasteful that the bottoms were mostly condemned to the dustbin!

Vanilla Cream Biscuits! Almost like Oreo, this had a thicker vanilla filling and tasted so fresh! I remember a few stale experiences with Oreo biscuits. =_=

Corn Cream Biscuits! The whole combi was just too irresistible!!

Custard Cream Biscuits! My favourite and a must-buy every time i am in Biscuit King!

Additional Information
As you can see above, Biscuit King has been featured many, many times!

Oh! Free delivery for orders above S$50! And despite its traditional products, technology is heavily utilised in this shop!

Black Carrot Cake @ Nam Heng Restaurant (@ Nam Heng Restaurant)

As promised, i did try the black carrot cake from Nam Heng restaurant although it was a month later from my last post on their white carrot cake!

At first glance, it looked dark enough which normally means the use of a sufficient amount of black sweet sauce; the most important determinant for black carrot cake (as the name obviously shows)!

Some of us prefer big pieces of "chopped up" carrot cake whereas my preference is with smaller-sized kibbles. My bad as i should have specially asked for more aggressive "chopping"!

Taste-wise, it was above average and pretty forgettable! This is despite the generous use of eggs and the addition of four prawns (which is seriously not necessary).

Guess i have to stick to the unforgettable kaya toast whenever i am in Nam Heng.

Special Roti Pratas @ Casuarina Curry

It's only in the past ten over years that roti prata starts to deviate from the usual egg or kosong. And one of the first few restaurants that starting that evolution is Casuarina Curry!

As the name suggests, Casuarina Curry is located along Casuarina Road although its origins began in Jalan Kayu; 'the' area for lovers of these South Indian pancakes!

There are a lot of prata stalls in Singapore; whether they are in coffeeshops, food courts or in the case of Causuarina Curry, a shop of its own.

However, my choice would likely be Casuarina Curry if time permits and laziness (to drive) is not an issue!

Boasting both outdoor and indoor dining, Casuarina Curry served deliciously fluffy yet crispy roti pratas and also employed waiters with mensa-level memory to ensure your orders are conveyed accurately to the kitchen!

No easy task indeed!

Typical Orders
One prata i always make a point to order in Casuarina  is plaster prata!

It's actually fried egg on a normal kosong prata and even if it sounds pretty un-fasinating, egg (yolk) lovers will scream with joy when the gooey yellow yolk drenched the crispy prata underneath.

Sinful and Yummy!

Another personal favourite is the double egg prata. Instead of one pathetic egg, two eggs were used to satisfy egg lovers like myself!

It's simple but you get a prata that is choked full of eggs!!

At S$2.20 each, it's an elongated piece that frequently leaves me craving for more!!! When you compare it to buying a small bread from breadtalk that easily costs S$2.00, it's a damn good deal over here!

My Curry Routine
I have always known myself to have weird eating habits. For example, i like plain porridge mixed with bars of chocolate.

But nothing beats the disgust on people's face when i told them i love my prata with curry and sugar!

Accordingly to THOSE people, it's only curry OR sugar. Never both! For a person who have eaten prata this weird way since childhood, i thought the sugar-curry mix is a perfect condiment!

Try it and you will know!

Once Again @ Marina Bay Sands

After a sumptuous dinner at DB Bistro, the Gang of Four proceeded to roam around the almost-completed Marina Bay Sands (MBS).

A leisurely walk was deemed to be necessary after that heavy intake of food! Walking aids in digestion, as my mom said.

Since my last visit, things have improved considerably in MBS! Construction is now mainly limited to the lotus-shaped Artscience Museum and it's getting more crowded (thankfully not as bad as Orchard road)!

And this time, i finally had the chance to walk along the waterfront promenade and take in the expansive night view of Singapore's central business district right opposite us!

It was still drizzling and the cool weather gave me that false yet blissful impression i am overseas. An alfresco coffee house seemed to be a great addition to the cooling outdoors then.

There's no doubt MBS is going to be the "in" place for everyone in the near future. And to tell you the truth, i am freaking excited!!!

Yogurt Drink in Thailand - Forget about Yakult or Vitagen in Singapore

With advertisements by Yakult or Vitagen touting the good effects of yogurt drink, it's no wonder that bottles are flying off the shelves despite the high price-tag!

Seriously, i have to fork out S$2.85 for one pack with five tiny bottles and i can easily down three bottles in one sitting! Bloody not worth it lor!

The savior comes in the form of Meiji Paigen, a probiotic drink that tastes exactly like the original flavour Yakult but costs only S$1.20 per 180ml bottle!

Contrast that with a 65ml Yakult bottle that costs S$0.57 and you know it's a better deal with Meiji!

And the best thing is that every now and then, there is a promotion for 2 bottles of Meiji Paigen for an incredible price of only S$1.50! Where can we find such fantastic deal???

I have the exact answer to my question!
The "where" is Bangkok!

Look at the size of this big baby that holds 1 litre of those delicious cultured milk! And you won't believe the price i got it for!

35 Baht, which works out to an INCREDIBLE S$1.60 per bottle!! And all for a 1,000 ml!! Wahaha, gulping 300ml at one go can only be surmised by two words; SHIOK AH!!!!
