KL Traditional Glass Char Siew Wanton Noodle (KL传统玻璃叉烧云吞面) @ Toa Payoh [Singapore]

I read of a Jiaxing teochew handmade fishball noodle stall at Toa Payoh with good reviews and purposely went over after my hair treatment; only to find that it was no longer there.

But I did notice another noodle stall that caught my attention; KL传统玻璃叉烧云吞面. Now, I am not that huge on KL wanton noodle since it is usually too sweet for my liking. However, my sister was keen, and we compromised by ordering one bowl just to try!

Main draw for me would be the glass / crystal char siew given how big a fan I am for fatty, sinfully oily caramelized pork belly! Frankly, the visual in front of me wasn't promising as I didn't find them charred enough.

Here's our order! The chef actually informed me that he purposely gave me a leaner cut, and that I could request for a fattier cut in the future; why?! He should have asked me earlier....

Let's start with the wantons first, which looked bigger than most of its competitor, and did I notice the specks of prawn meat behind those translucent skin? Anyway, they were normal tasting.

Now on the noodle; surprisingly not as dark as I thought it would be! My sister commented that there was a strong waft of lard aroma as I mixed up the noodle with the sauce and I totally agreed; just the smell alone whet my appetite!

Char siew, while lean, was smoked nicely with a caramelized sweetness! Damn, this would have been so much better if the char siew was fattier! Well, an excuse for me to return in the very near future, on my next hair treatment session!

Noodle was springy with a QQ texture and the taste was flavorful without any alkalinity that some disliked. Even though this was KL style, the sweetness from the black sauce wasn't as pronounced and I was happy with every scoopful I put into my mouth. p.s. loving the additional of pork lard!

Shall be back!
Let's hope the stall survive!
