Singapore is so well known to be a city state that many foreigners thought we are just a concrete jungle flushed with skyrise buildings! Venture out of the touristy areas and you would chance upon spacious pockets of areas that you would, for a moment, feel that you are outside of Singapore!
And the above paragraphs shall act as the prelude to my review of Under Der Linden, which is located along the Portsdown Road, where even locals might even make a mistake; thinking they were out of our little red dot.
There were extensive spaces for alfresco dining, including one at the back, even though locals like me would shun given the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes. Furthermore, it's a fact that most Singaporeans prefer air-conditioned environment, unless we are sick.
Comfortable, roomy indoor seatings for the win! As you can see, this garden restaurant (evidenced by the massive display of flora all over the place), can sit large groups! First picture showed a long table fit for 17 persons!
Anyway, we were here to celebrate a friend's birthday! Now, I hate thinking about places to go and this was proposed due a reel talking about the unlimited dinner buffet served at Under Der Linden! And as our friend's off day is on Mondays, this was the right fit since the buffet is only available from Mondays to Thursdays, excluding Public Holidays!
Let's now start with the food. Unlike the typical buffet, the selection was relatively limited with just three types of woodfire grilled meats, three options for pasta and risotto and three selections for sides. However, quality should count much more as compared to quality! And we only have 90 minutes to dine!
Thunder Crispy Fries - not sure where the thunder was but the fries were indeed crispy, with a crunchiness that's well loved by everyone of us, and topped with shredded cheese that added an additional layer of "pungent aroma"!
Traditional Sourdough - charcoal toasted with an enticing buttery fragrance, and blessed with crunches edges and soft insides! You know what would go best with it?
The mushroom soup!
Mushroom Soup - now, don't expect this to be your off the supermarket shelf campbell's soup! This would be the kind of mushroom soup I enjoyed; creamy, flavourful without being overly salty, and contained a good amount of mushroom bits that just screamed so good!
Cleaned up in no time.
And I had three servings!
Squid Ink Risotto - just that piece of grilled octopus leg was enough reason to go for seconds! It was seafoody goodness, sans any rubberiness. And the risotto had kernels of sweet corn that burst with sweetness! p.s. risotto was a bit salty though.
Spicy Arrabiata Pasta - not much excitement here as it was like your typical al-dente pasta with a cheesy sauce that tasted more tomato than chilli.
Beef Ragout Pasta - not that I am complaining about the spicy arrabiata pasta but this beef ragout pasta was a lot more memorable, standing out for its delicious minced beef sauce that made me order it twice!
Smoked Pork Spare Ribs - given that there were four of us, it's nice of the chef to only prepare four ribs; one for each of us as the serving for it could even be considered as too much for Alex!
And like you, I also wondered why Alex is joining us as he isn't a big fan of buffets and would likely not eat enough to make the meal "worth it"!
Anyway, the ribs were smoked with a honey marination that could never go wrong for me! And the meat was cooked till soft and tender. They were fatty and while that had the ability in enhancing their palatability; it could get a bit cloying if you have too much.
Honey Shoyu Poulet and Char Grilled Woodfire Kojio Ribeye - sadly, these two grilled meats were placed in one the same plate! Starting with the former, the chicken was juicy and grilled perfectly with a sweet marination that reminded me of the time when we used to barbecue at Yishun dam!
For the latter (the beef that is), it's impossible to resist the amazing charcoal aroma from the grilled meat, and it was just lightly seasoned with salt and pepper!
Doneness was a bit rare for the first serving and the second serving was better. Not that it matters much to me, so long I close my eyes and just chew through to let the sweetness of blood overwhelm my taste buds!
=====
So, so full! Serving size was small, which means the main aim wasn't to fill us up but to ensure we have the chance to sample every item, with the opportunity to ask for seconds, thirds or fourths if we were to enjoy any particular dish!
Kudos to the chefs; Steven and Eunice (she's so young)! And deepest appreciation to Anthea (a super cool individual) and Li Xuan, both of whom were super friendly and accomodating to our loud laughters!
We sure had a great time!
