Innland Bakery @ George Town in Penang [Malaysia]

"Carbohydrates / Starch is bad for your weight" - this statement has stayed with me for decades but truth be told, I ADORE carbo-heavy food, especially bread, and it's sad that I can't indulge as frivolously as I did in my youth!

The determination, however, could crumble in the face of delicious looking bread under the condition of hunger when one is overseas; which I did when I walked past Innland Bakery, with its display of freshly baked bread and pastries.

I was impressed with their variety of polo buns, a type of bread that originated from Hong Kong, although I am an almost hardcore traditionalist, preferring the simple one with just butter.

One of the reasons I managed to stave off the bread temptation is that most bakeries were for takeaways but here at Innland Bakery, it had an air-conditioned dine-in section with available seating! So, no reason for me to give this a miss!

HK Style Milk Tea - now, I am well accustomed to hk style milk tea but to receive this in a bottle, instead of freshly brewed, was a major letdown. If I want bottled milk tea, I can easily buy from 7-11.

It didn't help the situation after I took a sip; the taste was a bit off, too strong yet not in a flavorful, palatable way. Alex's order of hot silk stocking milk tea was way better.

Polo Bun with Butter - the reason why I stopped in front of and eventually stepped into Innland Bakery. Look at that perfectly crusted top skin; can't wait to bite into it!

The fluffy softness of the bun, past the crispy sweet top, was pure bliss, and more so when my teeth sank into the the thick slab of good quality butter! In Singapore, it's common to have char siew as a filling, which is another version I enjoy. Sadly, it wasn't available in Innland Bakery even though this basic one was good enough for me.

Emperor Honey Glazed Char Siu Pastry - how could I just stop at polo bun?! The word emperor caught my attention; I figured it would have to be amazing to be given this touch of royalty.

Pretty good in my opinion; it's quite a big piece, the minced meaty sauce within was nice although I thought it could be better to have some large pieces of char siew around, and while the pastry was flaky, it wasn't excessive.

Luncheon Meat with Bacon Egg Bun - an old school favorite when I was a kid but, without the egg. How wrong could you go with luncheon meat?! p.s. this was more for Alex, and it's a topseller.

Aside from the size (well, it cost RM 8.00), nothing particularly stood out after I had a bite, and felt more like a visit down memory lane. Or maybe I was too stuffed with my polo bun and the pastry.

=====

Would I be back? With so many eateries to try in just a few days, I am in a dilemma. I do like the polo bun but I am mindful of my weight. However, the picture of the polo bun with lemongrass pork chop looked so enticing! So who knows.
