On my last trip to Hanoi in 2023, I chanced upon a stall, Quán Gốc Đa, near the famous St. Joseph Cathedral, that sold deep fried snacks but as there were too many choices; we only managed to try a few and I told myself then that I would be back!
Back I did, in December 2024, but I had with me a gentleman whom I knew since I was born, and he's a prolific nagger. Yes, my dad. Hence, I can only choose one item, and after scrolling intimately through the menu, I decided.
Crispy Shrimp Pastry, as per menu, although many Singaporeans would have classified it as prawn crackers! With threed decently sized prawns, this cost only 15,000 dong, about S$0.90!
Fresh from the boiling oil, this featured a thin crisp, crunchy texture with pretty plain tasting batter that would have been more palatable if beansprouts were added. Nevertheless, the shrimps were sinfully delicious and didn't appear off, as with the case for prawn crackers from some stalls in Singapore.
Even dad was happy with it, although he rejected my request for a second one! :( Oh well, guess I would have to make another trip to Hanoi soon!
