The battle of the green shirts (T & K Seafood) and red shirts has been brewing for more than a decade and it's finally time for me to check out the opposing red shirts; also known as Lek & Rut Seafood!
I had a disappointing meal at T & K Seafood a few years ago and it's been a while since I last stayed at the main Yaowarat area; hence, plenty of opportunity to check out the food this time, even after 11pm. Main reason for going for Lek & Rut Seafood is because of the high turnover for seafood; lesser risk for food poisoning.
There's also an air-conditioned area for those who prefer to stay away from the polluted roadside dining. I honestly don't really care so long there isn't any foul stench and there are available seats!
You might not believe it but for three nights; you would find us having supper at Lek & Rut Seafood! Yes, I am worried about gaining weight but to justify, we either had a light dinner or didn't have any at all. Our standard order; shark's fins soup, prawns and bird's nest!
Shark's Fins Soup - it's always contentious to eat shark's fins soup; I am pointing the blame finger at Alex although I had to share the responsibility too. Food for thought; would it be any less controversial if we eat the fins and the meat too?
Grilled Prawns - I would prefer normal prawns that had smaller heads since I don't know how to appreciate the "brains" of the prawns, unlike my mom who would have relished them!
Plump, firm meat even though it would be a matter of luck; there was one serving whereby around 50% of the prawns didn't have the crunchy firmness associated with freshness. p.s. such big-headed prawns didn't taste as 'sweet' as the tiger prawns we would frequently have in Singapore.
Bird's Nest - at 200 baht a bowl, you have the option for hot or cold. Both were good and you can determine based on the weather; a bit cold and the hot bird's nest would be nice. The bird's nest was fragmented unlike the more expensive ones from Burapa although sweetness wise, still palatable! I love the ginkgo nuts and was smiling from ear to ear when Alex passed me all of his!
=====
We cleaned up what we ordered every single night. Only issue is that Alex is quite a small eat and with just the two of us, it would be hard for me to order more stuff like stir fried sotong, mantis prawns, crabs etc. Shall bring my mom next time; for sure we would order grill fish.
