The Recently Very Popular Hai Chi Jia Sour & Spicy Cup Noodle (嗨吃家酸辣粉)

I was gifted the above cup noodle by my younger sister and understood from her that it's super popular on online marketplaces! I guess it sure is as The Straits Times had even run an article and ranked this particular brand (Hai Chi Jia) of suan la fen (sour & spicy noodle) first out of eight different brands.

Taking note of the instructions as i am unsure if this would be soup based. My eyes almost popped when i noticed the 1764kJ per 100g as i assumed it is the same as calories. Thankfully, i ran a separate check on google and it's only 421 calories. p.s. 421 is still quite high given that Nissin cup noodle (chill crab) is only about 333 calories.

What's within the box? Individually packed were the sweet potato noodles, seasoning powder, chilli oil, vinegar, soya sauce, peanuts, dehydrated vegetables, and a fork.

Removed the packaging and threw everything in!

Someone suggested to put in a raw egg and i wasn't keen to do so as this would be my first time trying and i would prefer to have the "original" taste instead of adding something extra in order to enhance the flavour.

Poured in boiling water, covered the cup and endured the wait of five minutes.

Voila; the noodles were ready for consumption; look at that oily layer on top! Give it a nice stir to ensure a good mix of the flavours and ingredients. I am glad i had this at home as the first thing i would normally do is to have a sip of the soup but there's no spoon provided in the cup noodle! Home cutlery to the rescue!

Now, the soup wasn't as sour as i anticipated but that numbing spiciness definitely blew me away! It was as good as the mala pot i had at a food court in Northpoint shopping mall and i wouldn't have expected that from an instant cup noodle!

Loving the texture of the almost transparent sweet potato noodles and they did a marvellous job in soaking up the soup; every slurp was delightful even though i was sweating profusely.

To be honest, i wasn't that keen with the soup as it was just too spicy for my liking. However, i do not want to waste it. Hence, my strategy is to drink up as quickly as i could so that i could slowly indulge in the noodle and the accompanying ingredients like beancurd skin towards the end.

I mentioned peanuts as an ingredient earlier and it's fascinating that they remained crispy throughout despite being soaked in the soup! Obviously, they were great additions and gave an irresistible nutty twist to the meal; just like mala xiangguo.

Finally done with the food; with my hair, face and body drenched in sweat! Given the outflow of excessive bodily fluid and the mere fact that i enjoy Nissin cup noodles (seafood) better, i think this would be a one-off try. Nonetheless, i think Hai Chi Jia Sour & Spicy Cup Noodle would really appeal to those who adore anything that's spicy!

Pricing
My sister got it for S$3.00 a cup a few months ago but i guess the pricing has dropped quite significantly. You can make your purchase at online platforms like Shopee, Ezbuy or from brick and mortar stores like NTUC, Octobox.
