Remembering Rubee - Photographs from Film

I was sieving through the albums of film photographs for a baby picture of my sister when i chanced upon a few pictures on Rubee. They were taken over the years before digital photography rapidly gained popularity.

This was him at around 4-5 years old - plump with a toothy grin and huge black eyes that sparkled of life that apparently seemed to last forever. A look that appeared after he bounced up to me whenever i reached home from school and subsequently, from work.

Have i mentioned how much Rubee hated bathing? Drying him was a chore and i had to resort to placing him on top of the washing machine! Like his owner, he was damn afraid of heights and would not attempt to jump off.

His coat was actually tri-colour but Rubee slowly turned white as he aged painfully. He had a long body, short legs and had been often been mistaken as a dachshund mix! Haha.

Looking at these old pictures, i could not help but miss his presence. For one, there's neither the irritating bark nor violent hug to greet me when i open the door to my house...

Pork Satay (猪肉沙爹) @ Bedok South Hawker Centre (Kay Hwee BBQ - 佳辉 B.B.Q)

Amongst the meat choices for local satay, my vote will usually be mutton or pork. Especially pork since the cholesterol rich fatty skin is too irresistible in any circumstances!

My favourite pork satay stall is located in Chong Pang, a convenient 10-minute walk from my (actually my parents) humble flat. The fragrance, the charred bits, the marination - everything is up to my expectation to warrant it the best pork satay stall in Singapore.

Until i tried this stall at Bedok South Hawker Centre.

It appeared to be devoid of many customers on a Saturday night but i was craving for some fattening food without carbohydrates and had to have at least 10 sticks regardless of how unpopular the stall is.

My mom and i waited for close to 30 bloody minutes!

Worth the wait though as the honeyed fragrance of pork barbequed by traditional charcoal hit my sensitive nostrils the moment i collected the bamboo (or rattan?) tray from the lady boss.

Charred bits are necessary for pork satay even though in some cases, we tend to receive sticks of meat that were burnt beyond recognition and encrusted with a thick layer of carcinogenic carbon!

The ones at Kay Hwee were definitely better - not only were the satays covered with an acceptable level of charred bits, every stick was sinfully delish and dripped of juiciness unrivalled by even my fav stall in Chong Pang!

There are only two small problems - the satay curry was way too normal without that satisfying kick from Chong Pang and Bedok is too far from my house in Yishun.

Fishing Joy (iPhone) - What Happens After 99,999 Coins?

After knowing that marvellous cheat for fishing joy, i was trying to gain as many coins as i could in order to see what will happen after my coins reach the max of the five-digit counter.

Within a few hours, i reached over 40,000 coins!

It's not long before the counter doubled. My fingers were actually aching (on the verge of developing acute flexor tendinitis) but i was so near to reaching the maximum.

I had to continue!

Reaching.... Just a few hundred coins.. Endure the pain....

Finally!! 99,999 coins! Would there be an additional slot to accommodate 100,000 coins??

The everlasting laser beam continued but the display remained unchanged.

Though 100,000 was not reflected visually, i realised the system actually stored more than that amount. I shot many 7-coin nets and the counter only started decreasing after an hour or so.

Pâtisserie Glacé - Fruits Crepe Birthday Cake for Joyce (from Icon Village)

Though i love sweet stuff, i seldom crave for cakes and could hardly manage more than one slice. This is in stark contrast to my amazing younger sister who could devour half a kilogram cake in one seating!

The word "seldom" is used because a few years ago, my sisters bought a damn delicious cake for my birthday. It was so memorable - i can still vaguely 'taste' that weird combination of egg crepe and lightly fragrant cream on my lips.

Strangely, i could never get the name of the bakery right. Glaze? Claze? Gaze? Pâtisserie Glacé. Gosh, i doubt i could even pronounce it correctly!

Frenchy words but Glacé actually specialises in authentic Japanese pastries.

Unlike most cakes that are covered with cheese, cream or fondant, this simply decorated cake is tightly wrapped with a layer of crepe! Is that even impossible in the first place?!

Rubbing my hands with glee, i almost could not wait for my sister to slice the cake (it was her birthday!). My taste buds had waited so long to reminisce that unique sensation!

Look at that thick, chunky middle layer of Bavarian cream. Stuck within were pieces of fruits like mandarin orange, peach and pear - each providing a different burst of flavour!

To tell you the truth, the sponge did not have that airy, soft bite i remembered so well even though the light Bavarian cream with its custard-like texture continued to marvel me.

Sighz, i should have gone to my sister's place immediately upon collecting the cake!

7 Jokes to Lighten You for the Next Seven Days

Some jokes to lighten you up while i rest my brain.
Happy Laughing!

^_^

======

MONDAY

The mother of a 17-year-old girl was concerned that her daughter was having sex...

Worried the girl might become pregnant and adversely impact the family's status, she consulted the family doctor.

The doctor told her that teenagers today were very willful and any attempt to stop the girl would probably result in rebellion. He then told her to arrange for her daughter to be put on birth control and until then, talk to her and give her a box of condoms.

Later that evening, as her daughter was preparing for a date, the mother told her about the situation and handed her a box of condoms.

The girl burst out laughing and reached over to hug her mother, saying,

'Oh Mom! You don't have to worry about that! I'm dating Susan!'

TUESDAY

A man went to church one day and afterward he stopped to shake the preacher's hand. He said, 'Preacher, I'll tell you, that was a damned fine sermon.. Damned good!'

The preacher said, 'Thank you sir, but I'd rather you didn't use profanity.'

The man said, 'I was so damned impressed with that sermon I put five thousand dollars in the offering plate!'

The preacher said, 'No shit?'

WEDNESDAY

Brenda and Steve took their six-year-old son to the doctor.

With some hesitation, they explained that although their little angel appeared to be in good health, they were concerned about his rather small penis.

After examining the child, the doctor confidently declared, 'Just feed him pancakes. That should solve the problem.'

The next morning when the boy arrived at breakfast, there was a large stack of warm pancakes in the middle of the table.

'Gee, Mom,' he exclaimed. 'For me?'

'Just take two,' Brenda replied. 'The rest are for your father.'

THURSDAY

One night, an 87-year-old woman came home from Bingo to find her 92-year-old husband in bed with another woman.. She became violent and ended up pushing him off the balcony of their 20th floor apartment, killing him instantly.

Brought before the court, on the charge of murder, she was asked if she had anything to say in her own defense.

'Your Honor,' she began coolly, 'I figured that at 92, if he could screw, he could fly.'

FRIDAY

A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa . 'The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago.. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water.

However, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?'

After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, 'Wedding Cake.'

SATURDAY

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman who knocks everyone's socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm and who hangs over Bob's arm and listens intently to his every word.

His buddies at the club are all aghast.

At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, 'Bob, how'd you get the trophy girlfriend?' Bob replies, 'Girlfriend? She's my wife!'

They are knocked over, but continue to ask. 'So, how'd you persuade her to marry you?' 'I lied about my age', Bob replies. 'What, did you tell her you were only 50?'

Bob smiles and says, 'No, I told her I was 90.'

SUNDAY

Groups of Americans were traveling by tour bus through Holland ..

As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat's milk was used. She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing. 'These' she explained, 'Are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce.'

She then asked, 'What do you do in America with your old goats?'

A spry old gentleman answered, 'They send us on bus tours!

Rider's Cafe (Once Again) @ Fairways Drive (Near Turf City)

It's been a long, long time since i last paid a visit to the place where horses trot right beside you.

And it's also the only place in Singapore where chances are high that you will likely step onto a fresh pile of horse poo while walking towards the dining establishment.

It was after our interesting lesson on Angry Birds cupcakes decoration and i was a bit taken back to find the restaurant relatively quiet on a normally busy dinner time on Sundays.

Oh well, i took the opportunity to ask for a window seat as i never seemed to have the chance to do so in my last few visits!

A picturesque scene alright with glimpses of strolling horses every now and then.

On the other side of the view is a stable. The closeness of the horses' unassuming abode means that we can smell the pungent ammonia whenever the breeze picked up.

Thankfully i am a person of absolute concentration whenever it comes to food.

Crispy Soft Shell Crab
Slightly crunchier bite with a batter that contained more spices than the usual Japanese rendition. I might have considered second helpings if not for my experience that prices are not exactly comfortable for the pockets at Rider's Cafe.

Peanut Butter Jelly Milkshake
You either like this or you don't.

Obviously, i am one of those who adore this sinful drink! If i can take porridge with chocolate (and like it at the same time), this is something i can accept with no further question.

Orecchiette with Spiced Pork Ragu & Shaved Pecorino
I am bad with Italian words, even if it's food related. Since i am not an innards person, i would hesitate to order anything unusual that deviates from my limited dictionary. Just in case.

As far as my tongue is concerned, i have never tasted pasta that has so strong a meat taste. It was very delicious and i love the clam-shaped pasta as it made eating so much easier with just the use of a spoon!

Linguine with Chorizo & Portobello in Aglio Olio
In case you are wondering, chorizo is a type of sausage - as google has kindly informed me.

Kowtows to the rich fragrant garlic oil that stuck stubbornly to each strand of "noodle" and the high quality of ingredients that made this so memorable!

Cut down on the cheese though - Cavin is not a cheesy person.

Fishing Joy Game Cheat (iPhone) - Get Many Coins with Just A Few Simple Steps

Like Coin Dozer, this is a time wasting game (with the same aim to earn as many coins as possible for continual gameplay) and is strongly recommended for people who have too much time to spend.

Problem is; the coins will run out pretty fast especially when i use the most powerful fishing net (that cost 7 coins for each cast) and yet have no luck nor patience in capturing any big fish.

You can buy coins via the coin shop (just like Coin Dozer) but why waste good money when there's a simple cheat readily available. Expectedly, the great game cheater, Alex, was the source for this information.

Players of Fishing Joy should know that once the juice bar (bottom right of the screen) fills up fully, it will generate a laser (i thought it's cosmic) beam for a short period of time that kills any sea creature that touches it.

What this cheat seeks to achieve is to prolong the duration of this beam so that you can get many many coins at minimal effort!

Once the laser beam is shot out, press the HOME button on your iPhone and go to Settings > General > Set Date & Time.

Set the year to one year earlier.

Go back to the game and watch with joy as the coins keep increasing!

And increasing.

And increasing (10,286 coins)! Damn! If only i can use the same method to pump up the paltry amount of cash in my bank account.

Eventually you will come to a scene where no fish will appear on screen. This is the result of an incoming wave and for the game to continue its course, you have to revert the date back to the original year.

Do it a few more times and you will never be in that pathetic situation to wait for the standard coin generation which i think is five coins every minute and only up to 200 coins!
