Ba Buong Banh Mi @ Yishun Bus Interchange [Singapore]

I have lived in Yishun almost all my life and it took someone from Pioneer to let me know of a recently opened banh mi eatery in our beloved yet notorious town! That's embarrassing for a foodie and more so for someone who counts banh mi as his favorite Vietnamese food!

Whatever the case, I decided to check it out with my mom and cousin after a sinful and satisfying durian session with Xiao Hei, since it was located within Yishun bus interchange, albeit at its far end.

Frankly, this location wasn't optimal and although I didn't see a long queue, it was still assuring to see people waiting around for their order. Manned by two hard-working ladies, ordering was quick but it did take quite a while waiting for our food.

Since we were seated right in front of the banh mi counter, my eyes went wide with the generous meat portion in the banh mi. Now, I couldn't wait to dig into mine very soon! p.s. the wait eventually took about 20 minutes.

Banh Mi BBQ Pork - now, this was definitely bigger than expected!

While it appeared to be more meat balls than the BBQ pork that I was more accustomed to, the fact that the bread can't hold the meatballs was already a visual treat for me. Time to dig into the Vietnamese-style subway!

Bread met the cut; warmly toasted with a crisp texture. Pickled radish and carrots were thickly cut and while they gave more satisfaction with every bite; the pickled taste was relatively bland. The supposedly BBQ pork was essentially meat balls and even though they were soft, much of the flavour came from the chilli sauce and mayonnaise.

Overall still above average and I wouldn't mind checking out the other banh mis given how close I stay to Yishun bus interchange. p.s. walking distance of less than ten minutes.

Bun Cha / Thit Nuong - I generally don't enjoy Vietnamese noodle dishes like pho but exceptions came in the form of bun cha and bun thit nuong.

I ordered bun cha, but the one that came to my table was bun thit nuong, which was when the sauce was poured into the noodles, instead of the noodles going into the sauce.

Pouring all the sauce and given the noodles a good toast! Appetising with a good balance of sweetness, spiciness and sourness! Meat was grilled with a nice, smoky flavor that wasn't overly sweet. Spring rolls were surprisingly not bad; not as good as ones from vegetarian stalls but better than the ones I had at most Vietnamese eateries.

=====

Between banh mi and bun thit nuong, I am happier with the latter! However, I am a lover of Vietnamese baguette filled with meat, and I guess I would be back pretty soon!
