Last time I was at Tanjong Pagar Hawker Centre, a friendly diner sitting next to us recommended a carrot cake stall at the corner that apparently had a super good black and white version.
I remember that conversation well and this morning, I woke up early and ordered from the stall; Wei Wei Carrot Cake! There's actually another stall at the corner but this had more customers, and also better reviews on Google.
At S$4.50, this mixed plate seemed promising; there was plenty of egg for the white version whereas the black carrot cake appeared to be diced up pretty finely and color wasn't pale.
Sadly, it wasn't up to our expectations; black was a bit dry and despite the color; sweetness was muted and lacked the wok-hei that could have increased its palatability. White was bland and, personally, the larger pieces of carrot cake didn't appeal to me at all.
Both also featured a tinge of bitterness as the surfaces were quite charred, although at some carrot cake stalls, the bitterness was overshadowed by a layer of delicious caramelization. Maybe I should give the other stall a try next round just in case that diner was not referring to Wei Wei Carrot Cake.
