Father's Day is next week but it falls on the first day of the lunar month which means both my parents would only be having vegetarian food! Hence, it was decided to celebrate a week earlier and since we can't dine out like normal times; we ordered takeaway from 848 Seafood at Khatib.
Ordering was made by my younger sister through WhatsApp and given how stingy we are the proximity of the stall (just an MRT stop away), we opted for self-collection instead of delivery.
Time to indulge; marmite pork ribs, lala white bee hoon, fried dry kuey teow and chilli crabs! Simple tze char fare for ease of comparison with competitors in the cut-throat food industry. However, i believe that taking away, as compared to dining in, can sometimes drastically affect the taste and texture. With that in mind, let's proceed with the review.
Marmite Pork Ribs - unimpressive with a rather weak marmite flavour. I might have closed one eye if the ribs had that crisp outer layer but with takeaways, it might be a bit hard to achieve that.
Lala White Bee Hoon - as i am a frequent patron of the famous Sembawang white bee hoon, i must say that the one from 848 Seafood tasted bland and you definitely need the accompanying chilli to perk the flavour.
Fried Dry Kuey Teow - this was surprisingly good although not exactly a common tze char dish. As 848 Seafood combined local Chinese cuisine with Thai cuisine, this was more a Thai version of kuey teow which appealed to me with its infusion of the addictive wok-hei!
Chilli Crabs - at S$80 for two about 600-gram crab, this was the most expensive dish that disappointed us with a thickened chilli sauce that could have been improved by reducing the corn starch and increasing the chilli-tomato ratio. It's also a pity that while one crab was thankfully fresh; the other one wasn't so with a mushy texture.
=====
The guy (from 848 Seafood) liaising with my sister actually messaged her to ask if the food was okay. I actually appreciate it when stall-owners request for feedback and because of it (plus he was always prompt in his responses), i think it's worthwhile to give this stall a second chance in the near future! p.s. furthermore, the prices are also generally quite economical for the portions.
