Uggli Muffins - Ugly, Maybe But They Were Irresistible! @ Toa Payoh West Market & Food Centre (Lorong 1) [Singapore] #ugglimuffins

I haven't been travelling much within Singapore since the circuit breaker but last Sunday morning, i decided to take the train to Braddell MRT station; a quiet neighbourhood in the center of our little red dot!

My intention was to check out one of the stalls at Toa Payoh West Market & Food Centre which was literally just a five-minute walk from the MRT station. Those familiar with the original outlet of Creamier should remember the the hawker centre as it's just right next door.

It's not a huge hawker centre, taking just the second floor of the building, yet i couldn't seem to find the stall after walking one round. I did recall catching a strong whiff of something being baked and manage to retrace to the correct stall!

Problem; the queue was like 20-person long! Darn, i can't even see the stall from where i was queuing from! Word of advice; come earlier next time as the operating hours start from 10.00 am.

Could you guess what stall i was queuing for? For those looking for the main signboard, you would definitely be misled as the 'real' signage is not the main one!

Frankly, i should be forgiven for not be able to find the stall on my first try as the main main, lighted signboard indicated Bliss Haven Restaurant and with astigmatism, my eyes didn't even notice the "UggliMuffins.com" sign below!

I am not sure about the rest of you but people have been sharing pictures of Uggli Muffins extensively on my social media! The constant bombards on my feed had made me curious about it even though i am not really a cupcake / muffin person.

At this point, with just two customers in front of me, i was only two minutes' shy of a one-hour wait in the queue! I should be grumbling about it but i did make good use of my time by advancing my levels on Homescapes!

My turn; the owner was affable, super chatty and although i couldn't decide to buy 10 or 20 muffins and asked if the muffins could be refrigerated; he immediately told me to just get 10 as his muffins are best finished on the same day! And he's generous too; seeing the box had space, he threw in another 2 more!

My box of muffins! It was a mix of a few flavours; chocolate, oreo cookies, cranberries, sesame seed and walnuts. As the muffins were baked in batches, it's hard to lock in to a specific flavour. Hence, just grab what's available.

Looking like leftover scraps, it's true that aesthetically, they were not as appealing. But those who have been following my food reviews would know i am a sucker for taste. In fact, i will be more disappointed with a dish that looks good yet tastes unimpressive.

There were 14 muffins in my box (buy 10 get 2 free) and the boss actually passed me another one in a separate plastic bag; flavour was olive which i guess might not sound too palatable for many people.

Couldn't resist and took a bite; it had that obvious taste of olive fruit yet strangely, it appealed to me. There was a touch of saltiness to the flavour and unlike your usual muffins, the texture was fluffy instead of dense. Real muffin lovers might not enjoy such fluffy muffins though. Anyway, I was so tempted to try the other muffins in the box! Resist, i shall!

Back home and showing more photographs of the muffins; they are actually known as baby muffins *hence their cheaper price of just S$1.20 apiece) and not as huge as your typical muffins.

Aside from the fluffiness which i shared earlier, there were few other thing i found irresistible. The muffins were not cloyingly sweet like many others; they had a nice, buttery aroma; the stall was generous with their ingredients; and lastly, i love the dark, caramelized crust!

I kept another four baby muffins for breakfast next morning despite the stall owner's insistence that i should eat up on the same day. I had to experiment so that the next time i purchase, i would have a better gauge on the numbers to buy!

After a 10-minute toast in the oven, they were still so delicious! In fact, even more satisfying with the now-crispier crust. Guess i would need to double up the next time i go. p.s. do note that due to the high demand and limited supply, you might not be allowed to buy too many boxes.
