Vegetarian and Mexican Pizzas @ Pie Kia

Some of you might have heard of pie kia, a relatively new player to the competitive food industry in Singapore.

It's not difficult remembering the name as it sounds exactly like "pai kia", meaning bad kid in Hokkien.

For those interested, click the picture above for the true origin of such a unique name.

As the name suggests, Pie Kia serves pies and after trying them on a few occasions, i can tell you, they are really delicious!!! Especially my personal favourite; roast chicken!

However, the title of this post said it all! We are definitely not going to touch on pies today. Instead, i am going to talk about the pizzas in Pie Kia.

Vegetarian Pizza
Excuse me for showing such an unfocused picture! At the very very least, you are able to gauge the size of the pizza with a typical-sized lens cover at the side.

Ya, it wasn't big.
I know.

Size doesn't matter! It's the taste that's important. Besides having a super thin crust, Pie Kia used a lot of "liao" that makes me wonder how a vegetarian pizza can be so yummy even when everyone is using almost the same ingredients!

Mexican Pizza
Another failed picture!!! What's wrong with me?! Oh, i was actually sick but i could not resist the temptation to eat the two pizzas!

More savoury with the rich spiciness associated with most Mexican food, this was equally good although it got a bit too heavy for me after two slices!

=====

Location
Numerous Outlets!!

Price
Vegetarian Pizza - S$4.50
Mexican Pizza - S$4.80

For the moment (not sure when it will end), a promotional combo comprising both pizzas cost only S$7.90! A good chance to try both of them at the same time!

Lost Your iPhone?

I am a professional when it comes to losing things and although i have not lost any of my mobile phones in recent years (touch wood), i used to misplace them every six months!

The best thing? There's nothing i can do about it!!

Hence, you can imagine how excited i was when i read the above headline on The Straits Times (click the picture to read the details)!

Thinking it will be another great reason for me to persuade my colleagues (note: Hannah Lim) to switch to iPhone, i eagerly downloaded the application.

I have even told myself i have to inform Hannah tomorrow that iPhone has a FREE application that is proven to miraculously locate your lost phone, even if it's stolen lor!

After taking more than half an hour to transfer all my purchases, back up my iPhone and update the software to version 4.2.1, i was abruptly shown the screen (below) when i attempted to verify the totally necessary MobileMe.

iPhone 3GS is
NOT SUPPORTED?!?!?!?

F*beep*Ck! I hate you Steve Jobs!
Having said that, iPhone4 shall be on my wish list!

*after 10 minutes*
Damn, i really hate Apple products!!!

Really Random

There are so many things i can post on my blog but i find that each of them will take up a significant portion of my time, which is really limited when i am so freaking busy with work!!!

Currently, i am looking through the 25,255 picture files in my computer and see what i can talk about today.

I always get a guilty feeling whenever i miss a day of blogging. Not for anyone but myself. It's really interesting to read through the archives and see how much i have changed over the years.

Let's stop being emo about life in general (i shall save it for another day) and take a look at the following pictures to lighten the mood.

The snake demoness (she was mosaiced because of a confidentiality clause) was captured by my Fa-Hai inspired metal bowl that has the holy capability to absorb all evil beings!

This extremely powderful bowl can absorb multiple beings, even those with a low level of evil thoughts. The above was a kah kia of the demoness and was captured purely because i totally cannot stand his qian-bian face (which i forced him to do)! Wahaha.

I am going to abruptly end this post as the sleeping bug is bugging me!

White Carrot Cake @ Nam Heng Restaurant (南興餐室)

I was supposed to blog on my recent department's cruise but i am really too tired to sieve through the hundreds of pictures.

Since i still have the pictures for Nam Heng Restaurant (南興餐室) and my memory is still fresh, let's touch on the other breakfast item i had when i was there; carrot cake.

White version is never my choice when it comes to carrot cake.

I have always preferred the gooey black carrot cake that is sweet and savory and especially enjoy a plate that has the black black carrot cake diced up into very small pieces and fried with a lot of eggs!

Maybe it was diners' pressure that fateful because i knew i had to have a white carrot cake after seeing so many tables having plates of white instead of black!

So what's my noob verdict on white carrot cake (my last was 10 years ago i think)?

More accustomed to its sweeter black sibling, the white variant was a bit too plain for me. It was savoury with bits of salted radish enhancing the flavour.

It was definitely not disappointing; not when the carrot cake was covered with such a generous amount of eggs!

At S$2 a plate, the serving was decent and prawns (one normal sized, one puny sized) were added with no obvious change to the taste.

=====

Shall try the black one soon! Rubee needs to visit the vet (the clinic is very near to Nam Heng) again this Saturday! Sighz... Another cash outflow. :(

Water Guzzler!

I have a very interesting friend who can drink a lot of water! Well, it's definitely not as much as the amount of water kept in the Upper Seletar reservoir. Not as exaggerated as that!

You want proof?

Bet the above picture is good enough! If you need more evidence, please visit Orchard Central. Like Alex, you can perform the same stance!

Kaya Toast @ Nam Heng Restaurant (南興餐室)

Located at a corner along Upper Serangoon road (yes, i know it's a freaking long road) is a pretty run-down coffee shop by the name of Nam Heng restaurant (why is the word "restaurant" used instead of "coffee shop" remains unresolved).

Don't be deceived by this old school coffee shop that still employs faithful yet hardworking elderly helpers, has horizontal metal grilles popular in the pre-1990s era, and adopts a table-seating layout that screams of anything but orderly.

The first time i had my breakfast there, i was so impressed by their kaya toast i have never had another better one anywhere else!

Okay okay, i have not really taken the time to try three kopitiams (tried Killiney before) reviewed in this article but for the moment, it's the best i have.

A few complaints i usually reserve for kaya toast are that the toasted bread is too thick, the kaya is spread too thin and the butter tastes like unmotivated margarine! Combine all of them and i get a toast i practically hate to put in my mouth!

As you can see from the picture above, the toast was skinny thin without sacrificing the inside-softness, outside-crispiness and it's incredible that they still managed to squeeze in butter and kaya within that very restricted space!

The use of the sweeter custard kaya (the orangey-yellow type) has always been my preference and most importantly, they use a savoury butter (suspicion told me it could be my favourite Lurpak butter) that just made the overall package as good as it should be!

=====

There are other famous offerings in this small kopitiam and i shall save it for another posting! Lack the funds to dine out!!

Location
949 Upper Serangoon Road

(Junction of Simon Road and very near to Kovan MRT Station). For food eaters, this is the famous food stretch that includes the over-rated Punggol Nasi Lemak.

Price
S$1.40 for two pieces!

A Walk in Hort Park (Singapore)

Short for horticultural, i cannot never pronounce the word "hort" correctly... unless it sounds exactly like "hot". Well, i wasn't too far from the truth as the weather can get really hot and humid this November.

I had some time to kill after lunching with the Teo sisters and vaguely remembered that a friend mentioned a place called "Hort Park" located near Alexandra Village.

It was supposed to be some gardens+research+educational showcase by the National Parks (Singapore). The reviews were mixed with some saying it was beautiful and others complaining it was plain boring.

Since it was a weekday with only a handful of visitors, i took the time to explore the park at a leisurely pace.

Just to give you a rough idea on the size of this park. It wasn't huge but it was big enough for to me to sweat like a dog!

A pond is essential for any park. Ask any primary one kids! Their paintings on gardens and parks will always include a pond (usually a kidney shaped pond).

As you can see from the two pictures, this clear pond had loads of fishes!

Most places will station a person to sell fish food in order to earn additional income. In Hort Park, a vending machine will do exactly the same job at a fraction of the cost!

Reading a Lesley Pearse book and sipping a glass of ice-cold coffee amidst the green and quiet surrounding would be the perfect activities for this area. Okay, it will be perfect if the area was air conditioned.

Almost like the infinity pool! Except you can't swim in such shallow waters!

Ever heard of a natural shelter? This is a man-made natural shelter. If only man-made natural seats were available for us to rest our feet.

Spot the hyperactive rodent?

Victorian style shelter that cosplayers will like as a background! Provided they can tahan the heat!

You must take your time to explore each area, which wasn't easy for me with the glaring sun burning my skin! At times, i managed to chance upon something out of the blue! Like this scarecrow!

A windmill that didn't work and looked like it should belong to the scrap yard! Maybe it was part of the eco theme by the designer? Information displays were available to explain each theme; unfortunately i didn't have the patience to read!

I was really anticipating to visit the enclosed butterfly garden. However, luck was not with me... It's open only on Saturdays. :(

This shelter was more like the ones we see in Singapore. Especially back in the kampong days!

=====

The heat was making me grouchy and unmotivated to explore further!! I shall be back again to explore and take more pictures in the cooler (hopefully) month of December.
