Among all the food souvenirs in Taiwan, my favorite has to be the pineapple cake! I would usually buy a few dozens back to Singapore and indulge in one every day by air-frying it for around five minutes!
Aside from the Chiate brand, I also like the ones from Sunny Hills, which happened to have a branch with a cafe right at Kaohsiung City, within the popular pier 2 art center. Since that's an attraction by itself, we thought to just drop by and buy a few boxes to bring home.
Queue was insanely long as the cafe just opened for business! I went back half an hour later; with just two persons in front of us even though the queue quickly built up once we were seated!
Interior of the cafe, with just three long communal tables with hardly any privacy, I was wondering why the cafe was so well-liked by customers. Of course I know the pineapple cakes from Sunny Hills were great but it's not like you cannot buy them back and enjoy at the comfort of your own house.
Anyway, we were shown a menu similar to the above and asked to choose either one. I was flabbergasted as a limited menu should actually reduce the attractiveness of the cafe.
Even though there's a Sunny Hills outlet in Singapore, prices are higher and I would prefer to buy when I am in Taiwan or wait for family or friends to buy back! Took a sip of the tea; smooth and soothing, differing from the bitter astringent taste from most teas.
Pineapple cake didn't disappoint; while the texture was dry and stringy and the "skin" was quite thick, the pineapple used at Sunny Hills was known to be pure quality local Taiwanese pineapple pulp that balanced sweetness with sourness. It was the kind of pineapple cake that made me want to slowly enjoy each and every morsel.
Done with my dessert and proceeded to make payment at the counter. The cashier was a bit puzzled and explained that the set was complimentary for every customer! That totally explained its popularity! p.s. you can refill the drink but not the cake.

The free set is definitely a good move as it enticed me to buy a few boxes in support of the brand's generosity! Kidding as I already had intention to buy although the 'feel good' element did make me purchase more. I was mindful not to overbuy given the short expiry date for the freshly made pineapple cake.
There were also bottles of pineapple juice and boxes of bromelain enzyme powder for those who are interested. For the latter, it was said to "fight pain and swelling" and contained "chemicals that seem to interfere with tumor cells and slow blood clotting".
