For someone who has been complaining about the influx of eateries from China, it's indeed a contradiction to find myself deeply in love with the cuisine, although I still retain that strong connection and love for Singapore food!
Today's subject matter is Xiao Jiao Tian Sichuan Restaurant (小叫天); an eatery from Fuzhou city in Fujian, China that served Sichuan, instead of Hokkien cuisine. This was proposed by the Greatest Kon as there was a promotion, which had unfortunately lapsed when we visited.
Ordering via the QR code.
Kind of a norm nowadays!
Free Flow Self Service - chargeable at S$1.50 per person, I would encourage you to just top up as this gave you the following benefits; one of which was plain water that came in warm, hot, cold etc.
There would also be unlimited servings of soft serve ice cream in cones which my parents would love for sure. Taste wise, acceptable.
Need something to much on while you wait for your food?
Get your hands on these tiny snacks! p.s. I don't like.
One of the main reasons for getting this free flow self-service; the provision of rice, a necessary companion to have when you have China food! Trust me, it will be a major letdown for your taste buds should you decide to eliminate white rice.
Stir Fried Loofah with Fresh Shrimp - a dish that mom can cook very well but I think it's good to have a comparison. Incomparable as mom's version was so much more flavourful with the addition of eggs. Furthermore, the loofah was sliced a bit too thick and why were the seeds not removed?!
Sweet and Sour Pork - this was literally the perfect sweet and sour pork, and included together with the battered meat were cubes of sweet potatoes!
Covered in a thick layer of glossy sauce that was strongly flavoured and well balanced in both sweetness and sourness, the pork was meaty with a crispy batter. I can so imagine Jerald ordering just this and eat it with rice, without any other dishes! A definite must-order in my opinion.
Shrimp with Garlic Vermicelli - this scene reminded me of the Salt Baked Prawn Clay Pot from A Kitchen (友间厨坊) @ Yishun Junction 9. Would it fare as well?
After removing the cover, I thought it was more similar to Steelpot Vermicelli Pot at Nummun Thai Kitchen. This one from Xiao Jiao Tian was appetising for sure although I found it a bit too light on the seasoning and definitely not as unforgettable good as the one from Nummun. Prawns were nice and for a dish with the word garlic in its name; it could do with way more garlic.
Crispy Roast Chicken - one of four signature dishes in the restaurant, we chose this simply because it was the only one without the chilli sign beside its name! p.s. this took 30 minutes to arrive on our table!
Chicken meat from this half chicken was mushy yet not dry, and my favorite part had to be the thin, crisp chicken skin; if only all roast chicken rice stalls can master the technique! You get three kind of dips; sour plum sauce (I think), mala powder and chilli powder flakes.
=====
I will be back for the sweet and sour pork! What I shall look forward to having in my next visit would have to be the honey spicy chicken bites and salted egg yolk prawns!
