I prefer herbal bak kut teh.
Alex prefers peppery bak kut teh.
So when the craving for bak kut teh stuck both of us at the same time a few weeks ago, we had a hard time deciding exactly which stall to visit! That's when i have to sing my praises once again for google.
Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh [note: it is koot, not kut] - it served both types of bak ku teh (BKT); an optimal selection that would satisfy both Alex and myself
I am not very particular when it comes to the material used to hold my food. However, claypot is well known for retaining the heat that would help to intensify the flavour of its content.
As a result of mis-communication, i was given the set that included something i could not appreciate and stomach; internal organs (pork innards)! Thank god i still had a few pieces of pork ribs to chew on!
Eating bak kut teh with Chinese crullers (you tiao) is one of the best combination ever! However, they must still be hot, crunchy and fresh from the pot of boiling oil; essential elements missing in this case.
Honestly, the soup had a very mild herbal taste but it was flavorsome not in the way i would like it to be. The taste seemed to come from soy sauce whereas i am adamant that a herbal BKT must have a strong infusion of Chinese herbs.
That being said , i did enjoy it as a simple (yet expensive) pot of soup! And in typical Cavin's style, soaking the rice with soup is one fantastic way to have a fulfilling meal!

I would say Alex's peppery order tasted better than mine. Reason because it was not as peppery as the way most Singaporeans love it!
