Researching on Google Maps sometimes aren't as straightforward; at times, you have to be physically at the area to find out more highly rated places!
That's actually how I managed to find out of this place that was converted from abandoned warehouses, in Penang. Known as Jetty 35, even though there is no jetty, it was best described as a cultural, hipster hotspot similar to Haji Lane in Singapore.
Don't be deceived by the boring, plain facade facing the main road (Gat Lebuh Chulia) when you arrived. Main entrance would be along the above the alley where the vertical signboard, Jetty 35, would almost be missed out by most.
Fascinating to see the actual warehouse doors still being used! I thought it would be good to leave the doors closed at all times so that when visitors pull open the doors, they could be marvelled by the sight of another world within. But I also figured the doors would likely be too heavy.
The world within.
I don't know about you but for me, it's like going back to the old days, maybe even before I was born, with its vintage signboards, and the simple lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
Common for most places, even in Singapore.
Aside from antiques, tables lined up along the main passage, offering visitors a flea market experience, albeit most weren't manned. Many were unique, handmade items where you are not likely to find anywhere else.
This traditional attire appealed to me although the practical soul in me was adamant it would likely be another white elephant in my wardrobe.
You can even sign up for craft workshop! This was in fact one of the main draws of Jetty 35, as artists would conduct craft workshops, which was pivoted when the pandemic hit in 2020 with a sharp drop in tourists.
Other end of the passage which faced another main road, Pengkalan Weld. The three Chinese characters could be described as the home of the fashionable.
My eyes widened when I stepped into this hall; like a small kid who chanced upon the store room where many memories were kept. I should have been more diligent in checking if there is an old piggy bank that I can bring back to Singapore to add to my collection.
Retro furniture and furnishings in another hall that was more comfortable to walk, with less anxiety on the risk of breaking things, given how clumsy I am.
Bus tickets in the past! Guess kids nowadays wouldn't be able to imagine that back then, there would be another person in the bus, other than the driver, called a conductor whose main job was to issue tickets.
Within the compound were other small shops, including the postcard shop as above. There's another place that I would strongly recommend; the michelin Rasa Rasa! Click here for more details.
