New Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh (新順發肉骨茶) - The Malaysian Herbal Style @ Jalan Kayu [Singapore]

Whenever the food enclave "Jalan Kayu" popped out in our conversations, mom would immediately follow up by saying her good friend has tried the bak kut teh there and was really quite impressed by it.

Hint taken, mom! Although she has been going about it for around a year, it was only last Saturday that i finally brought her to New Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh! There wasn't any air-conditioning but just to give you a piece of advice; sit outside where it wasn't as stuffy.

Fresh Mushroom Soup
新鲜蘑菇汤
It was coming to 9.00 pm when we arrived and mom decided to go with this fresh mushroom soup which was presumed to be a healthier version over the savoury bak kut teh; unlike the Westernised creamy version, the broth was clear and tasted strong of natural mushroom flavour.

Salted Vegetables
菜尾
The Chinese characters actually translate into "the tail of vegetables" although it would be known simply as salted / preserved  vegetables for many of us. I used to dislike this until i had a really memorable one at Founder Bak Kut Teh. Even though these might not be as crunchy as the ones in Founder, the balanced combination of both saltiness and sweetness appealed to my taste buds.

Bak Kut Teh (1-person)
肉骨茶 (一人份)
The mind is blurred when the tummy is hungry; i forgot to tell the person to leave the intestines and liver out of my bak kut teh! Never mind, Mom would gladly devour them for me.

Personally, i didn't quite enjoy the pork ribs which were pretty tough and fatty. Soup wise was comparatively better with a distinctive herbal taste that was somewhat enhanced by a heavy dosage of soy sauce.

It was not the best herbal bak kut teh i had but it sure was satisfying to drown the spoonful of rice with the soup and had it with a piece of salted vegetable! Sad..... because i had a whole bowl of white rice so late at night...

How to lose weight?!?!?!?!
