Day Five of My Sabah (Kota Kinabalu) Trip - includes Sapi & Manukan Islands [Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park] Day Tour!

Thanks to Fox Movies, i woke up pretty late and didn't have time for a decent breakfast! Seeing that there was a coffee shop with a bun warmer along Gaya Street, we rapidly popped by to buy two large meat buns before the tour van came to pick us up at 8am!

See how big it was! Taste wise was pretty normal and i regretted not buying the same polo buns we had on Day Three. For those who are wondering where the coffee shop is, just remember it is right opposite Jesselton Hotel and a few shops to your left.

On our way to pick up other tourists! Originally, my intention was to travel to Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park ourselves via Jesselton Point but i guess we really didn't want the hassle (for one, the walk to Jesselton Point under the hot sun was a huge deterrence for Alex) and sign up with a local tour agency instead.

I shall share the name of the agency at the end of this post. By the way, i was expecting to take the ferry at Jesselton Point so that i can take more photographs of the area and maybe buy some souvenirs.

However, we were brought to Sutera Harbour Marina which was essentially a dock for yachts! :(

Was taking photographs of the surroundings while waiting for other tourists to arrive when i realised something - i didn't bring any sunblock! Sobs; gonna have lobster red skin in the next few days.

One of the speedboats shall bring us to our destination. Going back to the sunblock, the local guide assigned to the five of us told me that even though there were convenience stores on the islands, they could likely be sold out as the day before was the busy weekend!

The ticket, priced at RM 13.80 per person.

At 8.44 am, we left for Sapi Island - noticed an extremely unique vessel that seemed to be made entirely with aluminium!

Now about Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park - consisting of five islands (Pulau Gaya, Pulau Sapi, Pulau Manukan, Pulau Mamutik and Pulau Sulug) not far from the state capital of Kota Kinabalu, it was obviously well-liked by the locals and that explained our basic reasoning for visiting on a weekday.

Sapi Island - ranked third in size among the five islands, we did our much awaited snorkeling, had our lunch and took on two separately charged activities; parasailing and the zipline across two islands via the Coral Flyer

Proceeded to Manukan Island after our filling lunch!

Here's how the island looked like from where we were at Pulau Sapi. The words pulau and island were used interchargeably as both refer to the same thing; pulau being the Malay word for island.

If the sky was cloudless then, i could have taken quite a good photo of Mount Kinabalu before the earthquake that happened two days back. Anyway, it was heartbreaking to hear that there were casualties; a few of whom are Singaporeans.

May their souls rest in peace..

Nothing too exciting on Manukan Island for me except for snorkeling which i was also cutting short given the lack of a sunblock lotion! Although it was kind of therapeutic to pull out the dead skin, the initial few days of raw redness were always so frustrating!

On our way back to the mainland (not sure if i have used the term correctly as Borneo Island is the third largest island in the world) at 3pm.

Bidding farewell to our three lovely tour mates from China and the superbly helpful and cheerful Malaysian guide!

After taking a much needed bath back in the hotel, it's an early dinner at Fatty Kee! Imagine how pleased i was to find the usually crowded coffee shop literally empty when we reached.

Watched a movie, Parasyte Part 1, at a price of only RM 8.50 per ticket at Suria Sabah! The plot was terrifying good for a person who has never read the comic in the first place. Speaking of which, i have yet to catch part 2 which is currently showing in Singapore's cinemas!

Have you ever been issued a ticket for visiting the washroom? I was and don't play play, tax was professionally indicated on the ticket for the service okay!

Sapi Island Package
Purchased from Excellence Eco-Tours at RM 140 per person, it included land and sea transfer, entrance fees to the islands, BBQ lunch, snorkeling set and life jacket. We eventually changed to a two-island tour that added Manukan Island at no additional charge.

Excellence Eco-Tours specialised in tours for Mandarin-speaking traveller; hence, in the event you are bringing older folks who don't speak English (like my parents), this would be the agency to go for!

Louise's Birthday 2015

I guess i had better blogged on this before Jovyn's birthday which is coming in another two weeks' time! Honestly, i really need to cut down on travelling; aside from the higher expenditure, i am having an unprecedented backlog for the blog!

For those who have been following the birthday postings, you would have realised pattern! Similar cakes, almost the same place with familiar sofas but i make a point to come out with a post every year for a reason.

To reflect the progression as we age; it's like a time lapse over a long period of time and would be interesting to look at when we are in our 80s, 90s or even 100s.

Louise with her favourite gal who has gained quite a bit of weight although she remains as charming as ever; making everyone similes where ever she goes.

Mustn't neglect Jerald too! Cannot imagine he is now in primary two!

While most kids would identify the doll as Elsa, Jovyn adamantly declared that the name is none other than "princess"! Gosh, even i know Elsa is a queen!!!!

Anyway, let the singing began with four different versions; the usual, the mandarin, the malay and then the christian version. Both kids are extremely close to their Indian neighbors and it would be a matter of time they start to sing in Tamil / Hindi.

The kids have an ultimate objective for attending birthdays - to blow the candles!! And that's so rude considering that the birthday boy / girl should take precedence! Louise didn't have a chance at all!

Cutting the cake! For this, only Jovyn was interested.

Cedele's carrot cake used to be memorable and i am afraid it wasn't as good as before; the one we had was a tad too dry for my liking and the cream cheese frosting didn't taste as fresh too. :(

Manukan Island - The Place for Picnic @ Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park [Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia]

Our next island destination is Manukan Island, which was just nine minutes away from Sapi Island! I would have loved to conquer all five islands within the marine park but heard the rest could be given a miss.

My original objective was just to spend the whole day on Sapi Island but it was getting a bit too boring for both of us and we decided to join the rest of our travel mates who purchased the two-island tour. Most importantly, we didn't have to pay extra!

A lonesome bird on the jetty - not sure if it is recognised as a resident symbol as in the case of Rihiveli Beach Resort in Maldives

View of Kota Kinabalu - for those who have yet to hear the news, the city was rocked by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake yesterday and i sure hope the friends i have made in KK are safe and sound.

Clear water - personally, i feel that it is a must-have for every beach but here in Singapore; impossible give the heavy sea traffic and its related pollution.

Entrance tickets which i believe i have posted before. The good thing about joining a tour package is that you don't have to bother about this kind of things! Everything would likely be settled beforehand and if extra cost is involved, you would be notified well in advance.

Speaking of Pulau Manukan, you may consider a night stay at Manukan Island Resort. For chalet accommodation, i do find their prices on the exorbitant side.

On our way to find an empty beach table!

Unlike Sapi Island, there wasn't any purpose built tentage and we had to make do with placing our items under the sun with some shading. Well, it's good we were near a small eatery, the convenience store and a sea sports shop.

A pool for resort guests.

Another area for food; as far as amenities are concerned, i can find a lot more in Manukan vis-a-vis Sapi Island even though in terms of natural scenery, i would very much prefer Sapi

War relics - KK was actually badly damaged during the second world war and given their natural location as the gateway to the city, the islands were bombed too.

Scenery on the other side of the island which wasn't populated with beach-goers.

Sign warning people of stingers! I have not been stung by a jellyfish yet and i sure hope i never would be as i heard the pain is terribly lasting! *fingers crossed*

The main beach with Pulau Mamutik right in front.

Shaped like a banana, Manukan was said to be extremely popular with the locals and i can see why; long stretch of white sandy beach with tables shaded by trees.

See how crowded it was! For some badly needed quiet moments, go further down towards the side facing Kota Kinabalu.

Snorkeling time with my easybreath mask! A reputable website mentioned that Manukan Island offered the best snorkeling experience in the marine park; maybe i was unlucky as i didn't feel the same way!

Ice cream - the best remedy (psychologically) for the body on a hot day!

Our time spent at Manukan Island was pretty short at only about ninety minutes. Maybe because of the heat, i was feeling a bit under the weather and this brought back bad memories of the time i got sick in Maldives!

A few more photographs before we call it a day.
