Snorkeling in Redang Island (Episode One) - Kalong Bay

Krabi - a place that holds great memories as the very first time i tried snorkeling; an underwater activity that brought me to another dimension on Earth.

I would have loved to revisit except that the airfare this time was way too pricey! Therefore, i took advantage of the Malaysian Travel Fair and booked a package with Konsortium to Pulau Redang, an island on the Eastern side of Peninsular Malaysia.

There were (once again) too many pictures and i am in dilemma on what to touch on, how to segregate the posts in order to be as comprehensive as possible!

Why not like this - let's begin with the activity that brought me to Redang in the first place; snorkeling

Unlike Krabi, a briefing session was scheduled before every snorkeling trip (at least for Laguna Redang resort). This is really helpful for beginners as the presenter touched on the do's and don'ts, how to wear your snorkeling kit etc.

Most important message as emphasised on the board - don't step on the corals! They are fragile and need ten years in order to grow just one or two centimeters.

Our snorkeling contingent of over three hundred persons. To give you a better sense of the crowd, i was actually in the middle section.

Less than five minutes was the amount of time we needed to reach the destination - Kalong Bay! To be exact, this bay is so near to where we boarded the boat; i could have easily walked there myself.

The boatman preparing the ladder for our easy descent into the water. For those with wrist problems (like myself), you would fully understand my happiness when i saw this.

*splash* and i am in! Always remember; wear Crocs shoes when snorkeling!

Enjoy the following underwater pictures; courtesy of the recently purchased Olympus five-meter waterproof camera!

Okay, this does not truly reflect the magnificent underwater landscape but do note that i wasn't that unfamiliar with the underwater function and wasted quite a while to run through the different "scene" modes.

Funny thing about pictures is that you can only have a limited scope and nothing really prepares you for the magnitude for what you can see in real life. The ocean is huge (as everyone knows) and sometimes, luck is required.

I surfaced for a moment to defog my snorkeling mask.

People were still taking their own sweet time! I can snorkel for hours and would prefer to make full use of my time in the water!

Down again. Saw some fishes. Oh, i came out with a post on the essentials to bring for a snorkeling trip; please click here for more info!

Turned to the other side and there existed an entirely different story; schools of fishes!

Alex was happily dragging along a plastic bag full of bread and he was forewarned during the briefing session; no catching of fish using the plastic bag!

It was around three to four meters deep and the top-down view was not exactly pretty sight.

Swim further away from the boats to get a better view.

This looked like a pair of kissable lips on the rocks!

A way better underwater picture. I was still fiddling with the settings and eventually gave up as the snorkeling mask kept fogging and the reflection of light was irritating to my eyes.

Some photographs were taken using the 5X optical zoom function. As many of you are aware, i am not a tall person and there is only so long i can stretch out my arms.

Sea urchins! In Krabi, i can see hundreds, if not thousands of them! In Kalong bay, i could hardly see more than five.

Well, those black spiny balls are nothing compared to the many colourful fishes! Water condition (clarity, murkiness etc) was not as favourable as Krabi though.

I was busy snapping pictures of dancing corals when Alex abruptly pulled my vision to the side.

ARGH!!!! Jellyfish! Venomous yet so beautiful! Alex, an accomplished naval specialist (he would love this term) warned me that jellyfishes swim in groups and this lone ranger was a signal for more to come.

He was correct (and this is rare) and we started seeing more jellyfishes floating towards us! Despite the short time, i scrambled back to the boat.

The boatman caught one floating on the surface; i have no idea the poisonous tentacles are so long!

Unfortunately, a few visitors were stung and as a result, our visit was cut short. I was sad but with the jellyfishes in the water, even i was not keen to enter the water.

Returning was a breeze; disembarking was a torture. There should be a better system to improve efficiency and safety.

Do look out for more postings on redang (another three just on snorkeling)! They would be tagged under Travel_Redang.

Saveur [Sah-Vere] - Cheap & Good French Food @ Purvis Street [Singapore]

When one thinks of French cuisine in Singapore, one word that immediately comes to mind for commoners like myself is "expensive". There's another word to describe French food; tiny (as in portion).

Of course there are economical options like French Stall, La Petite Cuisine and recently, a new outfit by the name of Saveur (pronounced as sah-vere). This latest addition has also managed to create a strong following within a short period of time.

Just to give you a thumbs-up on its popularity - the Gang of Four reached approximately 15 minutes after Saveur opened its door for evening business and we waited 50 minutes to be seated!

Impatience was killing us slowly but we persevered; if we can queue half an hour for rojak at a hawker center, there is no reason why we could not do it for main meals at a decent restaurant.

Angel Hair Pasta
Presentation is a winner in this case! The pasta tasted absolutely delightful with mild seasoning that would do some good for my health.

Pan-Fried Foie Gras
Frankly a bit too charred although chao-ta had a direct positive effect on fatty stuff like goose liver. Mmmmmmm, terribly delicious! And terribly unhealthy!

Chicken Roulade
For a moment, i thought someone spitted on our chicken (excuse my ignorance)! The buttery basmatic rice was nice whereas i was not sold on the stuffed chicken; chicken rice tasted better in my opinion.

Crispy Pork Belly
This is such a common Chinese dish that it's impossible not to make any comparison. Honestly, it was actually a pretty good piece of roast pork; tender, flavourful meat topped with a layer of crunchy skin. The best part was that the taste grew on me after taking the first bite.

Barramundi
Yet another dish that caught me by surprise; the locked in flavour of the great ocean was undeniable yet the meat was not as salty as expected. We absolutely loved the minuscule crab potatoes!

Duck Confit
Given that the duck is the mascot for Sahvere, i would have assumed duck confit is the signature dish. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Kon compared the meat to KFC original fried chicken and i totally agreed with a little add-on; tougher KFC original fried chicken. It also lacked a fattening duck skin that is the norm for such a common dish.

Definitely a couple of  notches below La Petite Cuisine

Macadamia Crusted Pumpkin Salad and The English Breakfast Pizza @ Skinny Pizza [Raffles City]

A revisit to any food outlet usually means two things; either the food is really good or another chance is to be given in order to confirm / debunk a bad review.

My second time to Skinny Pizza was the result of a fantastic meal i had in February! However, this time around, there were hits and misses.

One of the misses was this cucumber drink i was raving about in my first review - refreshing yet with a sour aftertaste. Compared to the first time i had this, i took a much longer time to finish it. And it was not because i enjoyed it.

Side dishes were as memorable as they were in my virgin visit.

Chicken was selected for the sausage and didn't disappoint - spicy, moist and so delicious!

Macadamia Crusted Pumpkin Salad
Purely vegetarian; what caught us by surprise were the two whole slices of pumpkin!

In a way, this was really special although i would not put this as your typical salad item.

The English Breakfast Pizza
How do you put the renowned English Breakfast and make it into a pizza? Use the normal pizza dough as your plate!

Frankly, i would much prefer to have this using the plate as the ingredients fell all over the table when we attempted to take a slice out from the pan.

Definitely a miss.

Redevelopment of Singapore's Heritage Shophouses

Singapore's rapid rise in living standard and development has, in the course of time, seen the demolition of many historic buildings. Now, the word is on cultural preservation which is usually key to the tourism industry.

Like some Singaporeans, i am curious whenever i see a building shrouded in safety nets and scaffolding - would it only be refurbished with minimal damage to its structure and internal design?

My chance to find out came when i found this slightly opened door to a shophouse in the middle of redevelopment. There was no keep out sign and as far as i am concerned, it is a public area where freedom to walk is guaranteed.

I was taken aback by the sight that greeted me. The building was almost entirely demolished and exposed to the natural elements. I was actually expecting an empty shell.

Only the main facade (shop front) remained. I am not sure about you but in my case, i feel that the developer might as well destroy everything and construct the building from scratch.

It's one thing to preserve a building; it's another to make it a half-baked effort.

Seoul Yummy Waffle & Cleopatra's Champagne @ Seoul Yummy [Square 2]

It was supposed to be a dim sum trip to celebrate the Mother's Day but my dear pig sister was totally against the idea [came as a surprise as she used to love them so much].

Eventually, the choice was given to my great mother (she was the ultimate queen that day) who, to my utter disappointment, made the decision to revisit Seoul Yummy! I was so craving for dim sum.. :(

The only way to curb that disappointment was desserts. Seoul Yummy waffle it shall be!

Lacking the key buttery flavour despite the existence of peanut butter, the crisp waffles helped little to comfort my broken soul. Thankfully, the smooth and slightly sourish soft serve ice cream managed to rescue this dish.

Cleopatra's Champagne sounded like a great drink befitting the mother and came in an exquisite tea pot.

Bundled with three big bags of flower buds, i thought it was pretty good although not much difference from the flower tea bags i could get from the retail shops. Well, it is the experience that counts!

And not many places are that generous to give you more than one tea bag!
