The Climb Up Puaka Hill - Instagrammable Spot @ Pulau Ubin [Singapore]

Due to the travel restrictions as a result of the pandemic, I have actually visited
Pulau Ubin more often this year; ever since circuit breaker ended, I have been there twice and there might be another panned visit coming soon!

I am no stranger to the island and there were three times when my role was more a tour guide for my family and friends since I know the place pretty well. Having said that, I have yet to explore everything; one place I was unfamiliar with was Puaka Hill.

Finally got to checking it out in my last visit and I was expecting it to be boring since the tallest hill we have in Singapore is less than 200 meters and this Puaka Hill is way shorter at just 74 meters high.

Nonetheless, let's start the climb on comfortable, purpose-built path.

Which gave way to rugged ground shortly after. Please remember to wear a good pair of shoes; I was, as usual, on my Crocs, and almost sprained my ankles on a few occasions!

In less than 3 minutes, we arrived at the viewing platform; safely equipped with metal railing to prevent people from falling over the cliff and the placement of warning signs.

Nice, vantage view but nothing to scream about. So is that it? 3 minutes' just to see the water-filled Ubin Quarry? Well, it should be easy to finish the posting for the blog.

Not so fast! There was a narrow path on the side that seemed to go higher up!

Terrain was harder to climb; those bringing the older generation should be mindful of their safety as there's no metal railing on the side for support and to break their fall in the unfortunate event they trip.

Pocket of window on our right showing the now quiet Changi International Airport.

Another clearing in less than 2 minutes; it was blocked by those blue-red tape so I am guessing access would likely be restricted. But one section didn't have the tapes....

Being the obedient Singaporean who always follows the rules and regulations of the little red dot, I stepped forward via the path without the tape and this was it; the second viewing platform. This time, it didn't have the metal railing!

One misstep and you can say bye bye. Having a phobia for heights means I love to play safe by not pushing my boundaries. Call me a scaredy-cat but I am standing my ground.

Panoramic photograph of Ubin Quarry.

Another path leading upwards! How much higher do we need to go and how many more viewing platforms are there?!?! Well, only one way to find out; continue to climb!

A worn out danger sign. While it's good to have such warning signs, we can never deny that the weather elements can render them useless sometimes. Hence, always exercise your own judgment; we can't always blame the authorities when things go wrong.

I can already hear my mom complaining of the high steps if she were to come with us.

In front of me and behind me! Still got some way to go.

Pathway was rather narrow and I can't imagine if we come on a weekend as I presume there would be a lot more people, especially when we can't travel out of the country during this period of time.

Final destination; imagine the surprise on my face when I saw people beyond the metal railing! It's quite rare to find such blatant disregard of rules in Singapore!

The sign was clear as day; "no climbing over".

No warning sign near the huge, graffiti-laced boulder so I guess it would be fine for me to climb up for a better angle! Yes, I still have a fear for height but the area behind the boulder is quite wide and chances are low that i would fall down the hill.

See the number of people beyond the railing!
And from what I gathered, three different groups.

This would be something I would never do even if it can capture the attention of new followers to my Instagram. One wrong move and my family members would be grieving for me. What's worse is if I were to become paralyzed and suffer for the rest of my life.

According to my sister's friend, this is supposed to be an Instagram hotspot! I didn't know at all since I hardly scroll through the Instagram feed.

Ah, I finally know how they got past the railing; initially, I had assumed they climbed over. Turned out the railing didn't cover the entire perimeter and you could leisurely walk across to the other side. That's stupidity to the max for design!

There's still an adventurous streak within me and I do what the rest had done.
Cross over to the other side where the instagrammable spot is.

The furthest I would go; if you scroll through instagram with the hastag #puakahill, you would definitely recognize the same rock as the one in the above photograph. I didn't take any selfie but maybe I would next time with my new iPhone!

Panorama again; albeit at the highest point of Pulau Ubin.

Want to check out the instagrammable spot? Remember the above red arrow. p.s. as the spot is trending on social media, there's a chance the authority might extend the fencing soon. You just need a concerned citizen to feedback and we would be back to the boring views behind the railing.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

While 2020 is a sad year filled with gloominess due to the pandemic and the travel restrictions, there were still spots of optimism and hope; one such instance was that I finally managed to shed off some weight! Another key highlight was spending almost S$1,900 for Apple's latest phone; the iPhone 12 Pro Max!

I got the pacific blue 256 gigabyte option; frankly, the colour doesn't bother me. You can give me neon pink and I might still take it as the colour would eventually be covered by the quality phone cover anyway. To be honest, I don't even remember the colour of my iPhone XR.

Why change? The simplest reason is that it's been two years since my last upgrade and I was thinking of passing my XR to my dad as he always appears to break his mobile phones. I am not kidding; they were literally cracked right in the middle. As iPhone is more popular, there were covers made of military grade material that would hopefully address my dad's frustrating issue.

Another reason - the heavily publicized cameras, said to be the best, even among Apple's toughest competitors! I am not a techie expert but quality is definitely leaps ahead compared to iPhone XR; the colour, the detail and the clarity!

One of the cameras' function is the ability to take wide-angle shots! Even though this isn't something new, I was still darn happy with it as this would be helpful when I am reviewing overseas accommodations, especially cramped places like the bathroom.

Lugging a heavy DSLR can be troublesome (and tiring); hence, I am hoping this new iPhone 12 Pro Max would contribute more towards the pictures uploaded in this blog. I actually already did; the review for Empress Porridge used the photographs taken using iPhone 12 Pro Max!

Eat 3 Bowls (呷三碗) - The Best Lu Rou Fan in Singapore @ Crawford Lane Near Lavender MRT Station [Singapore] #eat3bowls

It's just seven minutes to 11.00 am and my heart dropped when I saw the long queue; darn, I should have arrived an hour earlier to beat the crowd! Turned out I over-reacted as the queue belonged to Tolido's Espresso Nook; the next door neighbour of the eatery I was going to check out that day.

Eat 3 Bowls (呷三碗) - the name is so literal; I don't think anyone needs to think too deeply on what it means. Came strongly recommended by the Great Kon, whom I trust almost entirely when it comes to food and travel, I can't wait to have the braised pork rice (luroufan) said to be the second best he ever had in his whole life.

The decor of the place was like going back to school in Taiwan; it might not be familiar to Singaporeans but if you enjoy Taiwanese movies like You Are the Apple of My Eye (那些年,我們一起追的女孩) and / or Our Times (我的少女時代), the wooden tables and chairs would ring a bell.

There was also a school bag hung over each chair! Quite cool and reminded me of a period of time when I was a teenager that such green colour bags, without the Chinese characters, were popular among our generation. Boy, that seemed so long ago!

Noticeboard for the "classroom" that was decorated in a cute manner with photos of food, newspaper / magazine cuttings of reviews and even a class schedule. I still remember being "arrowed" to spruce up a noticeboard for a CCA back in secondary school; no, it wasn't creatively done if my memory serves me right.

Menu in the form of a parental communication booklet! I think this is something used in Taiwan for the teachers to communicate with the students' parents. Nowadays, parents in Singapore use WhatsApp to converse with the teachers; way faster and much more convenient.

Look through the menu to determine what to do, make your order on the order list (sharing it with you towards the end of this post), pass it to the cashier, pay for the meal and then wait for the food to be delivered!

Initially, I thought eat 3 bowls refer to the notion that the food would be so good; you would have at least three bowls. That could be the case although it could also mean you can go for their signature mini-size three bowls which comprised of braised pork rice, chicken rice and intestine mee sua, with one serving of drink at just S$15.00!

Arrival of our beverage!

Bubble Milk Tea
- of course it's a must to have bubble milk tea from a Taiwan eatery! To be totally honest, it didn't blow me away as I thought it might; pretty normal with nice and chewy pearls.

Our food all came together! Aside from the signature mini-size three bowls, we also added a normal sized chicken rice, a normal sized braised pork rice and a tofu with century egg for sharing.

For three of us (including Alex who can be extremely picky), it should be more than sufficient but the Great Kon, whom we coincidentally bumped into about 15 minutes later at the same eatery), we should have topped up to a set for the normal-sized braised pork rice and chicken rice.

Tofu with Century Egg
- i can't resist century egg and managed to persuade my friends to share with me. Topped with pork floss, it's really just cold tofu with half a slice of century egg with a gooey middle.

On its own, the tofu wouldn't have tasted much but with the pork floss, it was a total 180-degree change and I think this would be something we can easily replicate at home! The century egg was rich and it was an explosion of flavours when I had it with the tofu and the pork floss; absolute bliss!

Signature Mini-Size Three Bowls
-for first timers who couldn't decide what to eat, this would be the best option whereby you can choose to sample all three signature dishes in mini portions; braised pork rice, chicken rice and intestine mee sua! I am least interested in the mee sua but nonetheless, would give it a taste for the sake of trying.

Braised Pork Rice - after trying so many luroufan in Singapore in the past few months, this is my favourite and no doubt the best I have had in Singapore! Full of flavour without being overwhelmingly porky, yet with an acceptable sweetness; you can't even feel the meat as there were just too much of the delicious fats!

I am so going to order the normal portion the next time I visit! It was mentioned earlier that the Great Kon said it's his second best luroufan; reason being the best he had was in Taiwan although it's still amazing that the second best is right here in our little red dot!

Chicken rice wasn't the type we are accustomed to having in Singapore; moist, shredded chicken with a light saltiness. Similar to what I had at Shida Night Market. Intestine mee sua had this strong bonito flakes flavour that tasted quite palatable. My friend had the intestines instead and he commented it was quite "potent"; meaning I should steer clear of it, I guess.

Father & Son (父子挡萝卜糕) - Mixed Black and White Carrot Cake @ Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre [Singapore] #bukitpanjanghawkercentre

Bukit Panjang is a town not exactly far from where I stay but since my car was scrapped about 5 years ago, I have not been to that area despite the existence of a direct bus service from Yishun!

One 'new' building is the Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre; the first hawker centre completed after a hiatus of more than 30 years since the last one in 2015. I have been waiting to try it and I finally got a chance when my brother in law decided to drive us there.

Of course I did my research on what to have for my breakfast that morning and one of the more popular choices is the Father & Son stall. As the name suggests, it's helmed by a father and his son although it was in the news partly because the son is said to be a hunk and one of the rare youngsters in the hawker trade!

I only saw the father as there's now a second branch in Admiralty hawker centre and the son is operating from there instead. p.s. this information came from a friend who used to live in Bukti Panjang and is now staying near Admiralty MRT station.

Specialty was carrot cake and I guess that's what we should be having. Friends who know me would be aware I am a fan of the black style carrot cake and hence, would not purposely order the white one. However, this was ordered by my sister and since she paid; I have no complaint, especially when there's still some black ones for me to indulge in!

Mixed style - white and black carrot cake with an extra egg, these warmed my heart with a fragrant aroma and each segment was pan-fried to a crisp, with addictive preserved radishes (chai po) in every bite!

The white one was actually one of the better white carrot cakes I have in my life even though the black one was still significantly better given the sweeter tinge. The pieces of carrot cake were a bit on the large side but I can't blame my sister as that's more my own personal choice. In terms of texture, none can still beat the carrot cake from Song Zhou at Bedok.

Empress Porridge - Delicious, Wholesale and Healthy Meal @ Fusionopolis (above one-north MRT Station) [Singapore]

When I first heard the name,
Empress Porridge, I envisioned the interior design of the shop to embrace the opulence beauty of imperial China with operational staff dressed in attire from the Qing Dynasty, including the wearing of horse-hoof shoes favoured by the empress and consorts.

Well, the staff members wore company tee shirts and the eatery couldn't have been more normal, with Christmas decorations captivating our eyes at the ordering counter. Anyway, it's not my first time trying Empress Porridge although I always purchase from its smaller outlet at NUH Medical Centre.

Menu was limited with just four dishes but I don't deviate from their signature empress porridge! I am not sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me as the portion here at Fusionopolis seemed much larger than the NUH Medical Centre branch.

Don't be deceived by the plain outlook; give the porridge a stir and you would find, in addition to the braised peanuts and youtian, a lot of other quality stuff like dried scallops, dried shrimps, squid and pork collar! Grains used was a mix of white and brown rice.

I can never pinpoint the porridge style; it neither has that smooth consistency favoured by the Cantonese version nor the overly watery kind typically loved by the Teochews. What it had was a simple, delicious, wholesome flavour all locked into each and every grain; said to be the result of slow cooking!

It might not be as luxurious as lobster porridge but I would still savor every spoonful put into my mouth until the whole bowl was cleaned out, with the exception of braised peanuts. p.s. the reason why I am a regular patron is because Alex loves Empress Porridge and often asks me to buy a pack for him whenever he works the morning shift on a weekday.
