Lingya / Ziqiang Night Market @ Kaohsiung City in Taiwan

"Puzzled" was written all over my face when I alighted, via Uber, at Lingya / Ziqiang Night Market. Wasn't this your typical Taiwanese commercial street!? Where were all the mobile food stalls?!

Turned out there were two types of night market in Taiwan; one kind was the typical kind where roads / streets would be closed and taken over by mobile food stalls. Another would be this kind.

Where permanent brick and mortar eateries were the contributors for customers to either dine in or take away for their dinners. I don't know about you but to me, that's not night market, and lacks the vibes to be classified as such!

There were stalls alright. Just not as many and as the roads weren't closed, it's really more for takeaways, unless you choose to dine indoors if the option is available, and due to proximity to the vehicular traffic; not exactly safe.

Chanced upon a few food stalls; as a fruit lover, I should have purchased but I honestly just wanted limited quantity since it's just for me (reserving stomach space for more food), and there's no price tag.

I noticed jewel biscuits! Are these childhood favourites in Taiwan too!? I always thought jewel biscuits are from Singapore and Malaysia! Officially known as iced gems, it originated from England, and were known as Belly Button Biscuits in Hong Kong!

Random photographs for reference.

Initially thought this could have been the "night market" despite its small size right outside a temple. From the look of it, operational only in the daytime.

Looking for the typical night market vibe? There's a short stretch right beside Siweixianghua Park 四維香花公園, and along Ziqiang 3rd road that would meet your needs.

There's a vegetarian stinky tofu stall at the corner, where we indulged in our favorite night market food! p.s. didn't taste like the usual stinky tofu but I am not complaining given my hunger.

We also had the most delicious Sugar Rice Cake from a permanent takeaway store right across the street, that claimed to have been in operations for over 60 years! Get the sesame one!

Mouth was still itchy and we chanced upon this 豬豬大王 (directly translated as pig pig king) which offered boneless chicken thigh and pork ribs! In the cold, breezy Kaohsiung night, we figured this would be a good buy.

Sold at just NT$50 for a small bag, this bag filled with popcorns of fried chicken thigh was hot as they were just deep fried a few moments ago! Sprinkled with sour plum powder (other options included original, salt and pepper, and chilli), we can't wait to dig in!

Oh my gosh; they were terribly good, and addictive! Literally like popcorn chicken, it was so shiok biting through its crispy exterior before the hot juice from the tender thigh meat burst out! In addition, the sour plum powder was the perfect flavour enhancer!

We should have gone with the extra large!
