Yaowarat Toasted Buns - Street Stall in the Night Market @ Bangkok Chinatown in Thailand

Chinatown at Bangkok is an area I would always drop by whenever I am at the capital city of Thailand; a must visit is Rabbit Hill Bar, plus a stroll at the daily (except for Mondays) night market along Yaowarat Road.

The Yaowarat Toasted Buns was no stranger in the night market but given my aversion for heavy starch / carbohydrates, especially after sunset; I had never patronized the street stall despite seeing the large congregation of waiting customers right in front!

This time round, I decided to give it a try, since there were six of us! Sharing is caring, and let's all grow fat together! First step, look out for the boxes of pencils and order lists, indicate what you want, make payment, and then wait.

13 flavors to choose from; and we went with the classics for toasts, namely sugar butter, egg custard and pandan custard. Very safe in my opinion!

Do note these were toasted buns, and not toasted breads!
And they were all toasted using old school charcoal.

Honestly, the use of buns was the reason why I had not been giving them a try even though it has gained popularity in the past few years; I personally prefer traditional breads over buns.

Our box of toasted goodies; with two of them literally oozing and overflowing with fillings that were your orange red custard and green pandan custard.

Sugar butter toasted bun was the least exciting, with a normal outlook that didn't stand out from the rest. I took a bite; and found a surprisingly crispy side on one facing, and a fluffy softness on the other face! That was actually quite a revelation as I have never had buns with such contrasting textures.

Now it's just a filling game and god were both egg custard and pandan custard buns satisfying! I was actually anticipating a cloying sweetness that would make me stop at one bite (each) but it was well-balanced and managed.

I would best describe it as similar to the old school buns with egg custard filling sold by an Indian uncle in 1980s Singapore, albeit with an interesting yet fascinating texture that totally appealed to me!

We cleaned it up and it's already a late 9pm; shocking that we had such carbo / starch rich food at such late timing! But would we try it again? Totally! Oh, i think it would best to eat them on the spot!
