We chose to visit Bangkok's Banthat Thong Road in the daytime which was a bad decision given how hot it was and I was impatiently searching for a highly reviewed, air-conditioned cafe along the stretch known as the world's 14th coolest street!
I managed to secure one listing although it's not along Banthat Thong Road. It's somewhat connected via a side lane that required us to cross a rather foul-smelling canal (above).
Alex was apprehensive but once we arrived at Mariée Café; he was taken aback by the French European facade, with large glass panels serving as windows and an overflowing display of plants welcoming us as we pulled open the doors.
Stepped in and you would be brought into another realm totally detached from the bustle signature of Bangkok; it's like we were transported to a quiet, soothing cafe somewhere in the hidden alley of a French city!
Even the stretch leading to the washrooms was given much attention, so immaculate, so pretty, so relaxing. p.s. I didn't take a dump though as I am not known to be a quiet pooper.
Enough about pooping, I am here for the air-conditioning but I am no freeloader. Let's check out the nice desserts and order some drinks while we were there!
Iced Earl Grey - accustomed to having hot earl grey, this was refreshing with a rich infusion. However, the portion was quite small and it's not hard to imagine the liquid to be cleared in a jiffy.
Signature 70% Dark Chocolate - so thick was the chocolate that I believe it would line up gut with them! Given the percentage of dark chocolate, it was a tad bitter and definitely not as sweet as some hot chocolate. That saucer of cream was whipped cream; a pity as I thought chantilly cream / marshmallows would have been better companions.
Tiramisu - Friends who know me for a while would know that while I enjoy desserts, tiramisu is never included. But this was said to be the signature for Mariée Café... So we ordered. It was creamy, topped with generous layer of chocolate powder and the ladyfinger pastries were well soaked with espresso. Well, I like the coldness of the cream!
Lemon Earl Grey Madeleine - I can't forget the absolutely irresistible madeleines from the now-closed DB Bistro Moderne at Marina Bay Sands and thought this would be something worth a try! What I didn't expect was the extravagant display!
Exuding aromatic earl grey flavour, the texture was too dense for my liking as the ones from DB Bistro Moderne were warm and fluffy! Thankfully the accompanying vanilla cream and the white-chocolate coated layer helped to improve its palatability.
=====
I wasn't that impressed with the desserts although you would have to discount my review, given my dislike for all kinds of tiramisu. What I really like from Mariée Café was the chillax atmosphere, and I believe a group of friends can literally spend hours here.
