The Glass Onion Bistro & Bar on the Ground Floor of Hotel Mi @ Bencoolen Street [Singapore]

I don't actively seek out new eateries but with the Entertainer app expiring by the end of this year; i know i have to be more 'enthusiastic' so that i don't lose out on this gift from a friend!

Hence, i was looking around and finally decided on The Glass Onion Bistro & Bar. For one, it has a decent google review score of about 4.0 and secondly, it's literally diagonally across one of the exits of Bencoolen MRT station (downtown aka blue line).

As it was already 2.00 pm when i reached; we had the whole place to ourselves and it's quite mentally quite disturbing as i always associate an empty restaurant with lousy food / service. Nevertheless, Alex was already seated and it's quite embarrassing to back out then...

Bar seats overlooking the main road for lone diners or those who prefer to people-watch while having a bottle of beer. It was drizzling quite heavily outside actually when i was there.

Setup on the right was likely for breakfast for the guests of Hotel Mi. Anyway, it was tough choosing from the recommended list and with a bit of help from the friendly waitress; we decided to go with the below.

Glass Onion Rings - a must order; each slice had just that thin layer of batter fried to a crisp and eating them was like having constant bursts of crunchy, natural sweetness! After the closure of buckaroo, i thought it would be impossible to find another place where i would return for the onion rings!

Chicken Chop - Alex's order which wasn't tagged with the "onion-recommended" logo and priced much lower than mine; which means the absolute discount i am getting from the Entertainer app wouldn't be much.

To be honest, i found this to be rather average tasting; given the high price of S$14.00, my expectation was something better than what i can find in hawker centre. However, Alex and i totally dig the thin and crunchy shoestring fries.

A5 Japanese Wagyu Ribcap - the holy grail for this meal at The Glass Onion and one of the most expensive items on the menu; priced at S$39.00!

The word on the menu that stood out was "Kagoshima" as i had the opportunity to try the Japanese wagyu beef at Savour - Singapore's Premier Gourmet Festival back in 2015 and remember how mind-boggling good it was! Thinly sliced and plated, you would not have to express your preferred doneness which i like as it means the chef's skill would definitely have to come into play.

Counting 17 slices in total, each one was grilled to perfect! Tender to the extent that every chew resulted in a flavourful trickle of meat juice that flowed down my throat; I was glad they were sliced up to so many pieces as it would mean i have to slowly savour each and every piece of them, and enjoy the good quality wagyu beef!

Japanese potato salad was quite tasty and that's coming from a person who would usually pass the potato salad to his friends. Given a choice, however, i would love to replace the salad with shoestring fries; yes the same one from the chicken chop.
