Day Two of My 5 Days, 4 Nights Itinerary to Bandung, the Paris of Java @ Indonesia

This was the view from my room at Best Western Premier La Grande hotel; nothing that deviated from what i shared previously but this was taken at 5.30 am! Even mum was deceived by the daylight and barged into our room at 6.00 am; thinking it was 7.00 am!

I couldn't go back to sleep anymore although i continued to laze on my comfortable bed. Anyway, above was an abandoned building that piqued my interest; the younger me might have considered dropping by for a mini-exploration.

The infused water container at the lobby of Best Western was a hit with my family members; to the extent that they would fill up their water bottles with infused water so that they can enjoy it on the go! Tsk!

Met up with Mr Askan, our friendly chauffeur assigned to us, for our day trip to the northern part of Bandung and here we were on the road to the city's outskirt.

Black panther outside the police station - guess that's the icon for the police in Indonesia. Actually, i don't think Singapore has icons, aside from the signature lion, for the ministries / public offices; a lot of cute and cuddly mascots though.

Awwww... thinking rabbits were popular pets with the Indonesians, it's to my horror to hear from Mr Askan that the region's delicacy is Sate Kelinci, which is translated to rabbit satay!

Farmhouse at Lembang - an attraction renowned for their hobbit houses. We were supposed to have a stopover at this place; didn't materialise as there wasn't sufficient time.

Fruit stalls along the road.

On the road again; note the motorbike with two adults, a toddler and a bird cage! You know what's the reason why i didn't take a motorbike license? My hair will be a total mess if i wear a helmet for an extended period of time! Guess i would be motivated to ride a motorbike if i live in Bandung.

Plantations everywhere; on farmland and at hillsides. It was an amazing view and my picture absolutely didn't do it any justice. Pictures can only do so much; see it yourself with your own eyes!

Taken near Cikole Jayagiri Resort where tall, thin trees surrounded us! The resort had a treetop adventure park with '8 circuits, 88 challenges and a staggering 26 flying fox"!

Looked like a camping ground to me; near Cikole Jayagiri Resort too.

First stop for our out-of-Bandung journey - the upturned boat mountain which was better known as the mouthful Tangkuban Perahu! There were three craters and we only went for the most accessible Kawah Ratu (Queen's Crater). For more information, visit here

Putting up a car wreck sent a strong signal for drivers to drive carefully so that they can avoid being the next victim. Well, that's what "hati hati dalam berkendaraan jangan sampai jadi korban berikutnya" meant.

Going further north to our next destination!

Roaming goats with a total disregard for motor vehicles; a sight you don't really see very often at car-heavy Singapore.

Second stop - Sari Ater Hot Spring Park; facilities were run down although it's hard to complain when admission ticket is less than S$3 a person and there were quite a lot of things to do (separate charges may apply for some though). Click here to read more.

Scrawny kitten outside Sari Ater Hot Spring Park. The few super cat lovers i know from my pet lovers centre days would likely carry a few cans of cat food in their handbags and offer one to the feline.

Short stopover at Cimahi tea plantation as i commented to Mr Askan that the view with the backdrop of the mountain was nice! Not much exploration as i have done plenty at the BOH tea plantation at Cameron Highlands

Plantations and houses on the hillside - this kind of scenery could never been seen at land-scarce Singapore. Another country where similar views with the ability to take my breath away is China.

Fruit stalls along the roadside, again.

Driving within a township with traditional horse-drawn carriages that stank up the environment! Nevertheless, it was an interesting sight for urbanites.

Heard from Mr Askan that this place used to be a market but it was burnt down and the authorities were building a new one on the site.

The floating market at Lembang was floated (pun unintended) as another attraction we can visit although we would not keen, at least not till we could have our official lunch!

I guess Indonesians do love their fruits and the one fruit that constantly popped up was the pineapple! By the way, someone recently argued with me that pineapple grows on trees!!! Trees!!

Purpose of the above photo wasn't to talk about the blatant spread of second hand smoke. It's the background of the G.H Universal Hotel which was designed like a black palace!

Are Indonesians pineapples really so good? Hmm... i am aware of the fame of Sarawak pineapples though; well, maybe the fruit was in season then.

Bandung's roadsides can often take my attention away and i am glad i opted to have a chauffeur instead of just a rented car to navigate my way around.

In order to get to our lunch destination at a themed restaurant, the car would have to cut across surjan bajuri, a flower street known as Cihedan (unsure i have gotten the spelling right)!

There's a mini zoo where kids of Jerald and Jovyn's age would likely enjoy.

Lunch, like finally, at Kampung Daun! By the time we had lunch, it was close to 3.00 pm. which was still bearable until you work out the Singapore time; it was already 4.00 pm. I am surprised we managed to suppress our hunger for so long! To check out what we had, click here

The sky had darkened significantly once we were done with lunch; even though i love the rain, i dislike seeing them whenever i travel as their existence would result in inconveniences! Not so nice photos, muddy roads etc.

Weather got extremely bad (strong wind, heavy rain) and a road we had to take to reach our 4th stop was closed because of some falling trees. Mr Askan had to navigate to another road instead which took us an extra 30-45 minutes.

Given the spaciousness in land, attractions in Indonesian are all over the place! That's why a fellow friend / former student had commented that although Singapore is small, all the attractions were serviced by good public transportation and by car, it would only take less than an hour of drive.

Dusun Bambu Family Leisure Park - if not for the rain, i strongly believe we would have enjoyed this bamboo-themed attraction a lot more.

Curug Cimahi - Cimahi waterfall or rainbow waterfall; if Alex was with me, he would ask to visit even though we only had about 30 minutes before it closed for the day. Not with the ladies in my family; they were shagged and expressed indifference when i asked if they would like to check it out.

A glimpse of the waterfall for your viewing pleasure. Entry to the attraction was priced at 25,000 Indonesian rupiah per person.

Nightfall at 6.00 pm.

Dinner at another themed restaurant - Stone Cafe! Honestly, i personally didn't feel that the interior design was in line with the word 'stone'. However, food like tom yum soup and that cheese fried banana were good.

We were so tired by the end of the day that we didn't venture out once Mr Askan sent us back to Best Western Premier La Grande hotel at 8.00 pm!

Advice Required - Computer for Gaming & Photo-Editing!

Technology has advanced exponentially over the past twenty years; back in 1997, dial-up was the norm for network connectivity and 56kps was a pretty good speed to navigate the text-heavy, rather than image-heavy webpages.

Why did i start on the advancement of technology? For the simple reason that i couldn't do without my computer and have taken it totally for granted; including the faster processor and lightning speed connectivity!

Now, the subset of it was that my Acer computer, purchased at a cost less than S$1,800 about six years ago, is giving me problems (slower processing speed, jerky mouse et) and i am thinking of replacing it with one that has solid state drive (bootup was said to be almost instantaneous), more ram and a newer yet faster processor.

I am contemplating purchasing my desktop from Aftershock PC as they seem to be garnering a lot of positive reviews recently for their individually built & customised gaming PCs. Even though i am not  good in gaming, i do enjoy the occasional thrill for Diablo 3, Left4Dead2 and Overwatch when the stress hits.

The problem with my deliberation is that the pricing for what i have indicated is way over my budget and it doesn't even include any keyboard, mouse and monitor! As i am no that tech savvy, i would really appreciate some advice here.

Is the pricing okay given the specifications? I noted that some, like the graphic card, might be an overkill and i likely wouldn't be able to see the graphical differences. Maybe i should clear it with the guru, the Great Kon!

Cimahi Tea Plantation @ Bandung [Indonesia]

My initial plan was to include this tea plantation as part of the detailed breakdown for the post on day two of my bandung trip but i have been so overwhelmed with work and the lunar new year (celebration of which continues until this Saturday); i decided to break it up!

Anyway, i was just commenting to the driver, Mr Askan, that the view on my side looked great with a mountain in the background and before i knew it, he drove us right down to the middle of the tea plantation for photo taking.

The ladies didn't bother joining me in stepping out of the motor vehicle as they had only one objective after the therapeutic hot spring at Sari Ater and that's to fill up their empty stomachs!

As it wasn't my first time to a tea plantation (it wasn't too long ago that i walked from the hotel to a tea plantation at Cameron Highlands), my interest was honestly not strong and i just took a few customary shots simply because i was already there.

Goro Goro Steamboat and Korean Buffet in Orchard Gateway @ Emerald [Singapore]

Reunion dinner is by far the only way to get every member in my immediate family to sit down and eat together at one table. In the past, mum would busy herself on the last day of the lunar year to prepare for the meal but now that she is getting old, her kids (us) prefer to cut the hassle and eat out instead.

For this year's reunion dinner, the vote was cast on Goro Goro Steamboat and Korean Buffet. We had a great time at its sister outlet, I'm Kim Korean BBQ, and thought this would be an equally good substitute since the latter was closed on the eve of lunar new year.

We were asked to arrive at 4.40 pm for a reservation at 5.00 pm and being a sucker for instructions, our family obeyed only to find the shutter closed and a ton of people waiting at the stuffy 4th floor lift lobby with no seat for the elderly!

I was irritated as the management could have done a lot better; i.e.  providing chairs for the elderly / needy, letting diners wait inside while they prepare the buffet, having a queue system in place etc. Nevertheless, all's forgotten when the shutter was pulled up a minute or two before 5.00 pm.

Boosting a view of orchard road for those seated next to the windows, the restaurant was actually quite spacious and comfy looking.

Given that it's the lunar new year season, the place was also decked out in new year decorations. Even though it's thoughtful to rope in the festive atmosphere, it tends to slightly reduce the "Korean" label associated with the eatery.

To the older generation, however, they were pleased to note the use of mandarin oranges and red packet (ang pow) on each table to welcome the diners.

What's another cash cow during this period? Lou Hei and to the delight of the two brats, Goro Goro offered the Happy Smoked Salmon Lou Hei and Huat Abalone Lou Hei at S$48.80++ and S$58.80++ respectively that were good for 10 persons. Prices reflected were promotional pricing, given after you like and share their facebook page.

Let the "lou" begin! The staff assigned to our table had a clear, booming voice and took on the role to spew out blessings most professionally! The "salad" tasted okay; was a bit on the sweet side. And, i personally dislike smoked salmon!

Let's now continue with the rest of the food and i shall begin by showing what's available at Goro Goro Steamboat and Korean Buffet.

First and foremost, do not be greedy and take too much food! Wastage penalty would be imposed at S$20 per 100 grams!

There's the ready-to-eat cooked food section and people familiar with I'm Kim Korean BBQ would find the variety similar; there were the sweet potatoes, tapioca delight, ddeokbokki / toppoki, jap chae etc.

More conventional (albeit boring) items like breaded scallops were also available but I was more surprised by the appearance of this supposedly Chinese dish; the mala veggie with pork skin!

No prize for guessing what were my favourites; the crispy kimchi pancake and the sweet signature korean fried chicken! Both items can also be found at I'm Kim Korean BBQ.

With steamboat, veggies would be a must for most people even though i would go purely for meat and seafood. If i want vegetables to fill up my tummy, i would have steamboat at home.

For the benefit of those who couldn't resist vegetables, you have a wide variety comprising of and not limited to cai xin, spinach, nai bai (milk cabbage), jiu bai, iceberg lettuce, shimeji mushrooms, corn, lady fingers, almond mushroom, long cabbage, straw mushrooms, black fungus, bamboo shoot, cooked radish, fried yam, winter melon, tomato, lotus, enoki mushrooms etc.

Love the way they categorise this as tofu and friends since friends can literally comprise of all other kind of miscellaneous items that can be thrown into steamboat!

There were kimchi, dumplings, bittergourd, dried pork skin, button mushroom, egg tofu, luncheon meat, green chilli, tau pok, tau kwa, hotdogs and a variety of balls (fish, lobster flavoured, mushroom, squid, pork, crab etc).

Meat madness wasn't exactly that insane about meat, in my opinion.

The range wasn't wide and limited to pig liver, squid, mussels, prawns, marinated beef, short plate, chicken breast, chicken meat, pork collar and pork belly. I would prefer thinly sliced meat to be eaten in shabu shabu style which didn't seem to be available. In this aspect, i think Sukiya offers a much better deal.

Another item i would usually avoid for buffet would be the carbohydrates like rice, tang hoon, ee mee, mee sua and instant noodles, as shown above.

Drinks were inclusive and aside from iced water, korean barley tea, water chestnut, mango juice and lime juice, you can also request for warm water or hot barley tea from the main counter.

Condiments and sauces were important aspects in steamboat and for steamboat sessions at home, i would usually have a saucer of thai sweet chilli sauce although i demand a lot more in commercial entities. Compared to Hai Di Lao and even Sukiya, it's limited selection and sugar isn't included! Those who know me well would know i like my combi of sesame and peanut sauce with a spoonful of sugar, coriander and chopped spring onions! By the way, the two big plates in the above photo housed watermelons and honeydews.

Selection of up to two soup bases from the following seven types; bak kut teh, mala, tomato, collagen, ginseng chicken, korean seaweed and tom yum. Additional soup base would be chargeable at S$5 each.

Description of soup bases for your reference.

Mum wasn't feeling well that day and we went with tomato and ginseng chicken; latter was not too bad while the former had a tinge of burnt aftertaste which couldn't meet up to Hai Di Lao's standard.

To be totally honest, i didn't quite enjoy the steamboat at Goro Goro; soup bases i tried were not the best even for the pricing and again, i am all for thinly sliced meat for shabu shabu (which i know is Japanese rather than Korean). If only they can add on a BBQ function as in BBQ cum steamboat buffet since i am way more impressed with I'm Kim Korean BBQ

Done with your meal and need something sweeter than the watermelon and honeydew? Pay extra for the Korean ice cream!

Despite my misgiving when it comes to the food at Goro Goro, i was happy with the service provided by the service staff (prompt to refilling soups and ability to bear with the two hyperactive kids) except for the beginning when customers were kept waiting before entering the restaurant.
