The name "old hen" evokes a picture of a nutritional herbal soup often made by the older generation although the decoration of the coffee bar would have quickly pushed you out of that misconception.
With us arriving at a few minutes before 9.30pm and the shop closing at 10pm, we guessed we could not have ordered anything except for beverages. The above was my matcha latte which could have benefited from a stronger dose of green tea powder.
While we were chatting, my eyes couldn't help stealing glances at the cake display counter and something caught my eyes - the unique ondeh ondeh cake! I just had a whole pack of sweet popcorn at the movie theatre yet i couldn't resist ordering a slice just to try it!
Well, i shouldn't have expected gula melaka to be oozing out from the cake. Furthermore, the small informative card on the counter had already explained this was a pandan cake with gula melaka buttercream.
The fragrant pandan aroma was the appetiser followed by the roughly grated coconut meat that was too dry despite being soaked in a concoction of gula melaka. The gula melaka buttercream was light without being overly heavy for the palate. Strangely, i got the impression the cake tasted more like chendol than ondeh ondeh.
As this was such a last minute visit, i didn't manage to check out Old Hen's other offerings (like the above Singapore-brewed chocolate drink, i think)!
