Kylin Peak Hot Spring @ Taichung City in Taiwan

Soaking in hot spring water is an activity I actually enjoy and when I planned for a trip to Taiwan during winter in 2025, I purposely checked if there's any hot spring conveniently located along the routes we were travelling on using our rental car

And we found one; which was midway between Tea Way Hotel and Lavender Forest! Kylin Peak Hot Spring, which was recently discovered less than 30 years, after the devastating 921 earthquake in year 1999!

From the outside, it did feel like a pretty rustic Japanese hot spring resort with Chinese elements. It also offered accommodation but given our disdain for frequent hotel changes, our objective was just to soak in hot spring and relax our muscles.

Operating from 6.00 am till 11.30 pm, there were three time slots where entry fees differ. For 10.00 am till 8.00 pm, adults would be priced at NT$380 per person, regardless of weekends / weekdays. Taking the more expensive weekend prices, 6.00 am till 10.00 am would cost NT$200 per person whereas 8.00 pm till 10.30 pm would be NT$250.

The outdoor pools using the hot spring said to be sodium bicarbonate based (carbonic acid content of 9630 mg per liter) and "the first of its kind in the world"! Sadly, we wouldn't be able to use these pools.

Because we conveniently forgot to bring our swimming trunks! :(

An option is available for forgetful souls like us though, paying the same price of NT$380 (plus NT$5 for a shower cap) since we were so looking forward to having a hot spring soak. And that option would be in the building above, with two prominent characters 裸汤.

It means naked bath; so, no photographs within! Verdict, only two baths within and one was 41.7 degrees celcius hot, and the other was 25.5 degrees celcius. The shower cap we purchased was useless as no one was wearing it!

Soak was therapeutic but honestly, didn't impress. Maybe I was too pampered, as my first communal hot spring experience was just too unforgettably good; Onsen Heaven in Norboribetsu, Hokkaido

p.s. those who wish to dry their wet swimsuits can use the above dryer.

Kylin is a mythological creature in Chinese legend and as the hot spring was named after it, you could also purchase cute statues of the creature from the counter. Kylin (also known as Qilin) is said to symbolize prosperity and longevity.
