One of my major weaknesses when it comes to food would be our local pancake known as min jiang kueh (面煎糕). Hence, when I heard of a highly reviewed one at Bugis, I jumped at the opportunity to check it out last week!
For a typical Chinese like me, the name of the stall was well-thought of as it is similar to 步步高升; meaning "the process of continuous advancement". Since I am non-ambitious, I hope that by eating the pancake, I would achieve wealth and prosperity, step by step!
Menu as above. Many flavors to choose from but my heart goes only with the old school pancake instead of puff pancakes! Four of them had the thumbs-up sign yet with only one stomach; I had to be selective. :(
Old School Peanut Pancake - I don't understand why the stall operator had to use a plastic bag for each slice of pancake?! As I was dining in, such unnecessary use of plastic is uncomfortable, especially for person who is conscious, albeit not excessively, about sustainability.
Now coming to the pancake; it was the thicker kind with a beehive texture that was airy, didn't stick to the teeth and had literally that memorable, old school, good min jiang kueh flavour. This would appeal to those who crave for nostalgia but for me, a crisp shell would always better the taste! Filling was also quite paltry...
Old School Signature Coconut Pancake - in contrast to the peanut pancake, the coconut filling was a lot more generous and when I took the first bite; you know what it reminded me? Like the shreds of sweetened coconut in kueh dar dar; appetising without being cloying! Sedap! p.s. would still love it to be crispier though.
