Yummy Nasi Lemak House @ Johor Bahru in Malaysia

Would your expectation increase when you see a restaurant that's named with words like tasty, yummy, delicious etc? I don't but I would remember if the food eventually turned out to be NOT what the restaurant is named after.

Yummy Nasi Lemak House was a suggestion by Alex, with a good review score of 4.2 from almost 400 reviewers on Google Map. While it is located in Malaysia, I am trying with an open mind and not expecting this to be better than the nasi lemak from Village Park

It was a lazy Thursday morning; hence, the seemingly empty air-conditioned eatery. Without the humans, however, the wall mural was in full view and I noticed a similarity with works from Lat, the famous Malaysian cartoonist!

This traditional street food counter was another eye-catching feature in the eatery; no less the display of nonya kueh which always captivates my heart, and stomach given that they would be considered as bite sized portions.

Ondeh Ondeh - sad thing was that the ondeh ondeh didn't burst and ooze with the signature melted gula melaka. Good thing was that the gula melaka had a grainy texture with a high quality taste that was not as sweet, and aromatic.

Kueh Lapis - a disappointment with a strange, milk taste and like not fully cooked. I highlighted this with the boss, I think, who was surprised as this was one of her bestsellers in the eatery.

Our nasi lemak sets!

Nasi Goreng Ayam Goreng Biasa - served on a bamboo coaster, this plain looking set came with a single piece of fried chicken, sambal chilli, rice, cucumber, a fried egg, peanuts and papadum.

Visual highlight for me was the sambal chilli, which had so much onions! I took a sample and it was the sweeter kind that made me think of the fillings in sardine curry puff, sans the sardine, which I personally enjoy although I bet some of you would take issue with.

Fried chicken was blessed with crispy skin and meat was moist. The thing is that it's not exceptional and hardly impressed on us, unlike the one from Village Park

Rice was more interesting as there was a herby aftertaste that didn't taste weird. With grainy, non-oily texture, it was nice having the rice with sambal chilli, peanuts and other ingredients!

Nasi Goreng Ayam Goreng Berempah - this was Alex's order and of course, I asked for a bite for the sake of comparing between this spiced chicken and my fried chicken.

My recommendation, go for this Ayam Goreng Berempah; the marination was much nicer, with a layer of honey sweetness that seeped deep into the chicken meat. p.s. the portion of meat appeared smaller though.

=====

Frankly and in general, the nasi lemak here was pretty good and I would come again should the nasi lemak craving hits when I am in Johor Bahru! Only problem; there were so many food options in the area and I only have one stomach! p.s. I love having the papadum!
