The one thing I am always on the lookout when I am overseas would be the food souvenirs that I can purchase back for my family and friends back home! And it's no difference when I was in Sapa last December.
Sometimes, there were just too many shops to choose from and this particular one caught my attention for its variety, pretty obscure location and the stationing of a pretty, long-haired lady!
While there were many items to choose from, the determinant would be the taste and despite the language barrier (translate app helped), the lady was game-on on opening a few packets of local snacks for us to try!
You can choose from red dates, macadamia nuts, cashew nuts with skin, dried mangoes, dried strawberries, dried mushroom snack, sour plums, dried jackfruit chips etc etc. I only go for the ones I am keen with, namely cashew nuts with skin, mushrooms and jackfruit chips!
I kid you not; I bought a lot! Pricing ranged from 100,000 dong for a pack of strawberry / mushrooms to 130,000 dong for a 500 grams of cashew nuts with skin. Obviously, auntie me would ask for freebies if I know I bought a lot, although not a hard bargain since it's only right for the business to earn.
Enough said.
Seeing my look of adoration staring at the tray of dried persimmons near the shopfront, the same pretty lady did something that surprised me! No, she didn't give me one to sample.
She actually passed me a pack, for free!
Damn, I think we did buy a lot.
Frankly, this was one of the best dried persimmon I had in my life, with insides that continued to be so moist, meaty and sweet! And unlike the ones we get in Singapore, they didn't come covered in the white powder.
Our family went again on the last day of our Sapa trip to stock up on the food souvenirs as I think we would require more. This time, I managed to check out their Chinese chestnuts. Sadly, it was cold, and the taste didn't meet my cut.
