Takeaway for Chicken 'N' Watermelon 'N' Waffles from Yardbird Southern Table and Bar at Marina Bay Sands [Singapore]

Yea, we can finally dine in at food establishments tomorrow, albeit with some conditions. The past few weeks had been torturing, especially on the few days I was staying at Marina Bay Sands

Before heightened alert kicked in, my plan was to have lunch at Yardbird Southern Table and Bar, said to serve the best fried chicken in the United States and had received positive reviews from friends. I was hesitant to continue the plan as I am averse to takeaway food from restaurants; with the prices charged, dining in would be much preferred.

But F&B in Marina Bay Sands wasn't known to be easy on the wallet; even a simple toast set at Toast Box cost more than S$7.00! Hence, we decided to just go with Yardbird as I was working from the hotel and only had an hour lunch break.

Ta-dah! The paper bag was of very good quality! Anyway, we decided not to bring the food back to the hotel room and opted to have our lunch at the promenade facing the city's skyline!

Woah, another nice bag within the paper bag; this time holding all the food, including cutleries and condiments. Strange, I thought I took a picture of the inside.

No paper plates? No problem; just tear the bag and use it as a base for the food! Forgot to mention, we only purchased one item to be shared and I am glad I didn't overbuy as the "Chicken 'N' Watermelon 'N' Waffles" would be more than sufficient for Alex and I.

Usually, five pieces of chicken would make a meal for the both of us. And this came with extra waffles and watermelon. Knowing Alex, he would know a serving of mashed potatoes and French fries.

The diced up, spiced watermelon was an interesting take; it felt like the pieces of watermelon were dunked in a concoction of chilli sauce similar to those from Hainanese chicken rice stalls in Singapore, but less garlicky. While invigorating and refreshing for the palates, I am happy with plain watermelon that just taste sweet.

Cheddar cheese waffles - drenched with maple syrup (poured by yours truly), I wasn't too hopeful given that takeaways had the tendency to soften the waffles and make them lose their crispy texture.

Waffles were thick and the batter had herbs in them; amateur me can't discern the cheddar cheese though which was strange since the flavour would have been noticeable! Whatever the case, the texture was soggy, as expected.

Soaking the waffles with the accompanying maple syrup was a sure way to improve its palatability and there's an unusual flavour to the maple syrup, as if it was fermented like liquor.

Now, the fried chicken was definitely the star of the meal. What was my first thought after taking the first bite? The juicy chicken had a home-cooked feel to it, with a light-seasoning marination some might complain it's too normal. To me, it takes skill to make something that plain, taste so spectacular!

I can't stand such watery chilli......

Aside from the juiciness, another heavily weighted criterion for a good piece of fried chicken would be the skin. Thin and crispy, the way I like it! "Best fried chicken in the United States" - Yardbird was indeed worthy for the title.

Time to pack up!
