Surrey Hills Grocer - The Cafe @ One Holland Village [Singapore]

Have you been to One Holland Village, one of the newest malls in Singapore? Interestingly, it's not your conventional air-conditioned mall; open concept and marketed as pet-friendly!

Even Surrey Hills Grocer, our subject for today, had an inhouse dog bakery! So, for those scared of dogs, please be mindful that there will be a lot of dogs in and around the shopping mall. But they were so friendly and adorable!

Anyway, my purpose wasn't to look and fawn over the dogs. It was a gathering with with colleagues turned friends, some of whom have already left the organization. Company matters but food would make the gathering even more memorable.

Let's scan the QR code and check out the extensive menu. Everything looked so good although pricing wise; on the high side with mains priced minimally at S$22.

Premium Water by Purezza - this bottle of premium water was surprisingly affordable though; aside from being refillable, you can also get four cups, meaning each person paid just 75 cents (before service charge and GST).

Triple Truffle Fries - why triple truffle? Because the fries were coated with truffle powder, with trickles of truffle olive oil and the option to dip in homemade truffle mayo.

Topped with parmesan shavings, the truffle fries were freshly cut potatoes that tasted so amazing; I didn't even require tomato / chilli sauce! A must order the next time I visit!

Chicken & Chestnut - first thing I noticed was the oversized vegetable known as chicory. Where was the chicken? And I don't see any chestnuts lying around.

Here's the unappetising chicken breast meat; interestingly, it wasn't dried but there wasn't any much taste. This was when the pool of sauce came into the picture. Said to be chestnut mushroom bisque, it was more a Japanese glace in my opinion; one that was both savory and sweet, and the delicious deal breaker for this dish.

Truffle Wagyu Donut - this got me confused; strange looking donut that appeared to be more a bagel yet presented like a burger. So what was it?!

One thing for sure, the the almost medium rare wagyu patty was incredibly juicy and the flavor was so yummy that I would readily just had the patty on its own! The donut turned out to be Polish donut; not sure what would be differences from our normal donut but this was soft, oily yet complemented well as a bun for the patty!

Chicken Katsu Tikka Marsala - with a sprinkling of spider webs, which was in fact parmesan cheese, on a large piece of fried breaded chicken sitting on a bed of tikka marsala sauce, this was said to be popular.

An indian-Japanese fusion dish, my taste buds enjoyed the authenticity and complexity of the spices and I think it's uncommon to have such a unique yet tasty combination. Recommended!

Orange Caramel Bacon Benny - how did benny get into the picture? I have no idea but I ordered this for two simple reasons; the picture on the menu looked mouthwatering, and its weird sounding name.

Credits to the fluffy omelette and the orange caramel fish sauce that wasn't sickeningly sweet. While I enjoyed the pork belly, the piece was a bit too much for me, especially when there was still a slice of sourdough waiting for me!

Churros Stack - I have been craving for churros for quite some time and I think fried charcoal churros with vanilla ice cream, almond crumble and dark chocolate would be a nice conclusion for the meal.

Sadly, this failed to impress. Churros were dry and hard and the pâtissier, if there was one, could have been more liberal with the coating of cinnamon sugar. Disappointing.

=====

Although the dessert was a disappointment, our group was generally satisfied with the food. Of course, the company was good, with plenty of laughter that made us one of the noisiest in Surrey Hills Grocer
