Eng Kee Chicken Wings @ One Punggol Hawker Centre [Singapore] #onepunggolhawkercentre

Taking advantage of the cycling expedition from Yishun to Punggol, we decided to drop by one of Singapore's newest hawker center; One Punggol Hawker Centre!

For a new hawker center, I am actually surprised that not many stalls were open for the breakfast crowd and the one with the longest queue had close to 20 persons lining up! It's actually a famous stall that originated from a coffee shop in commonwealth.

Renowned for their chicken wings, said to be the best in Singapore, Eng Kee was also known to be the stall that our Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, queued for 30 minutes; in-person. Obviously, the interest in Eng Kee skyrocketed after that! What was so nice about the chicken wings that even our busy head of government had to queue for them?!

Aside from chicken wings, you do have options for other ingredients like fried beancurd, sausages, fishcakes, otah, luncheon meat, and stomach fillers like bee hoon, kway teow noodles etc.

My order - bee hoon, two chicken wings and one fried egg; one of the many types of breakfasts we are blessed with in Singapore. That's why I always miss Singapore food when I am overseas.

Hungrily took a bite of the fried bee hoon! Well, it sure was a healthier version; not much oil, and not much taste. Star Hup Lee was a few notches tastier.

Now on the famous chicken wings; so famous until the store's signboard also included the words "chicken words". It's not my first time having Eng Kee though; I had visited its original branch quite a few years ago. One thing I remember was the thinness of the chicken skin, which means not much batter was used to coat the wings.

It remained unchanged over the years and I must say the wings were well-marinated with an unique flavor that stood out from other chicken wings. Two problems though; the wings were not fresh from the frying oil, lacking the crispness, and the sambal chilli was too watery!

Despite cleaning up the plate, I was unsatisfied as I thought it was a waste of my calorie-intake. In aspects like bee hoon, chicken wings and even the sambal chilli, Star Hup Lee was better and it was disappointing to cycle so far for something that I could have, and nicer, within minutes' walk from my home in Yishun! If only the wings were crispier.
