Out of the possibly millions of food trips in his 32 years of life, the Great Kon would still fondly recollect his childhood affection for a plate of wanton noodles from Telok Blangah food centre.
We were brought to try it a long time ago although memory told me it was not well taken by the rest of the Gang. Nonetheless, my tastes buds have undergone drastic transformation over the past few years and it was only fair that i should give the hawker stall another chance.
It always helps to know that there is an option to take as many pieces of deep fried pork lard as your arteries can take; truly a euphoric moment for me!
My order with chilli while Alex had the traditional dark soya sauce without chilli sauce.
The char siew was said to be made by the owner himself and boy did it surprise me! The char siew was fattening and juicy with a substantial amount of caramelised charrness that never fails to up the "taste"! Forget about the wantons; there was nothing special about them.
Noodles wise, i had the suspicion that it was the same type of noodle used by Kok Kee Wanton Noodle (国记云吞面) at Lavender Food Square; they were thinner than conventional mee kia, smooth and didn't seem to have that strong a "kee" flavour.
S$3 was hardly sufficient for us! If you happen to be around the vicinity, i would strongly recommend the authentic version (Alex's order was more delicious!) without chilli or tomato sauce.
