Somboon Seafood Restaurant @ Bangkok in Thailand

My first trip to Bangkok was in 2007 and I immediately fell in love with the city! One of the food recommendations I read up on the web mentioned a Somboon Seafood restaurant, opened in 1969, which I finally got to trying 17 years later! 

From just one outlet, it has now expanded to eight branches! This particular branch near King Power Mahanakhon appeared to be either new or recently renovated and you know what's the first thing I noticed? There were a lot of Japanese in the restaurant! 

Going up to the second floor as the ground level was full. As you can see from the board on the side, it's the list reservation for the day! Thankfully, we arrived at 6pm, before the descent of the dinner crowd. 

Love it when restaurants provide unlimited serviettes! Anyway, the signature for Somboon Seafood is crab curry which we will definitely order. Problem has always been to decide what else to order! 

Grilled Freshwater Prawns - Small for 550 baht where we got six prawns in total. Alex balked at the price as the grilled prawns at Satay Jae Aeng cost just 200 baht for ten! 

Needless to say, the meat was fresh, crunchy and juicy, and the taste elevated with the hot seafood dip! Shiok, although my fingers will be cleaner if I go with the unpeeled prawns from Satay Jae Aeng.

Stir Fried Morning Glory - a vegetable to reduce our guiltiness for overindulging seafood and meat. Crunchy, al dente with a touch of spiciness that excited the taste buds! 

Chicken with Cashew Nuts - this was one visually unappealing dish that I would like to recommend. Sauce was teriyaki flavor with a nutty aftertaste, and how to resist when they add in crunchy cashew nuts, onions and mushrooms! Yummy.
 
Fried Curry Crab Meat - honestly, for the star of the show, I was expecting much better plating! My mom would have commented the above looked like something that belonged to a toilet bowl! 

But, it was so unforgettably good! You know what this reminded me of, like chilli crab that was fried with loads of eggs, resulting in a mushy texture dotted with satisfying, chunky pieces of crab meat! Taste was lip smacking amazing! 

Do note to eat with plain rice as it can be a tad salty on its own. This was the raw few moments where I actually almost ordered extra rice so that I can clean up the plate! Why did it take me so long to visit Somboon Seafood?! Even the Greatest Kon was surprised I only tried it in July this year.
