Wanton Mee (云吞面) @ Fei Fei Wan Tan Mee King (飞飞云吞面大王)

Sometimes i really like exploring the little lanes in century-old areas like Joo Chiat.

Besides finding novelty shops not found anywhere else, there are also the food outlets that have been in operation for a few generations.

And they are usually famous for being able to survive for so long and have the one and only shop in Singapore; no expansion, no other branches.

The problem with fame is that you have numerous shops along the same road selling identical food and you will be scratching your head; wondering which one is the original one.

Fei Fei Wan Tan Mee King (飞飞云吞面大王) is one such shop and has been in existence since 1949! There's another stall with almost the same name further down the road but we eventually settled for this coffee shop operative because it has more diners (even Lim Yu Beng was patronising this shop).

Strangely, in Singapore, the wanton (dumpling) is never looked upon as the main star in wanton mee. Instead, the noodles are heavily regarded as the main ingredient.

This bowl of noodles at fei fei made me cringed! Dryness for noodles cannot be condoned!!!

Well, never judge by your first impression. After a thorough mixing, the Q noodles turned out to be super duper tasty. Very traditional and taste best with at most a spoonful of tomato sauce.

The same cannot be said for the other ingredients. The dumplings are too salty although the soup was pretty flavourful while the char siew was essentially the type i dislike most. I would suggest feifei get their char siew (叉烧) from my most favourite shop; Kay Lee Roasted Meat.
