After the many, many servings of amazing stinky tofu in Taiwan earlier this year, I thought I would go into the too-much-stinky-tofu mode back in Singapore; or so I assumed I would be.
Until the wafts of stinkiness met my nostrils when I exited Yishun train station; they came from a stinky tofu stall at a temporary night market right outside! I resisted the temptation for a week plus before finally giving in!
Ordering stinky tofu had never been so stressful! Choose from six types; i.e. white, black bean, changsha white, changsha black, white soft (not stinky) and black soft (not stinky), the portion size, i.e. small, medium, large and select one of 13 flavours.
A9 - my medium portion of White Stinky Tofu with Specialty Pickled Vegetables Spicy Sauce; it hurt to pay S$9.50 as the pricing in Taiwan was more than 50% off..... Oh well, beggars can't be choosers.
Saving grace - for the pricing I paid, there were around nine to ten pieces! Now, although it was white stinky tofu I went for, the supposed stench wasn't that bad; absolutely edible.
Each piece had a crunchy shell, with soft tofu insides. Main star had to be the sauce, which was spicy, flavorful, with the added sesame seeds providing an enhanced aroma, hence increasing its addictiveness!
Every bite was a burst of delicious flavor mixed with a tinge of mala-ness! Batter was quite thick but this wasn't an disadvantage; it actually managed to soak up the sauce, resulting in shiokness as I slowly tore through every piece.
Pickled cabbage was not bad; I would prefer them to be more pickled but I am not complaining here as I have had really bad ones that were bland, soft or a combination of both.
Done! p.s. a tad too spicy for me with an overwhelming sense of guilt as I am supposed to be cutting down on such sinful stuff! I am so glad that the night market had ended its run in Yishun!
