Cheng Tng at Ah Luck Dessert in Margaret Drive Hawker Centre (Queenstown) [Singapore] #margaretdrivehawkercentre

Weather has been insanely hot in the past few weeks and I was so looking forward to having some cold drinks / desserts when I finally checked out the barely year-old Margaret Drive Hawker Centre!

Imagine how pleased I was to chance upon the Ah Luck Dessert stall when I first stepped into the hawker center! Local desserts are the best and my eyes quickly screened through the menu to see whether it has my favorite cheng tng.

This was strange; waffles in a local dessert stall?! Well, I might give it a try if I am craving for waffles although it's hard to ignore the fact that the basic waffle with ice cream cost more than three times a cheng tng / ice kacang / chendol.

My nice pile of icy goodness! Yes, I got iced cheng tng; the best local dessert against the hot weather! Okay, I am just biased as I absolutely adore it; to the extent I can have two or three bowls in one day!

Pushing the shaved ice down to the soup so that I am not faced with just eating solidified water. Took a sip and my preliminary review was that the while the broth was a nice counter to the heat, the longan flavor could have been richer. Having said that, I am just happy it's not simple, sugar syrup water.

For only S$1.50 a bowl, it was clear that there were a lot of ingredients hidden underneath the ice, like snow fungus, sago, ginkgo nuts, longans, red dates and persimmons. Now that I think about it, many dessert stalls seem to have removed pang da hai, which used to be common in cheng tng.

Ingredients were generally good, with the exception of the bitter ginkgo nuts! I was most impressed with the addition of red dates, which wasn't that common in many cheng tng stalls, and the stall operator used pretty good quality ones!

Satisfied!
