Many people cannot do without social media nowadays and I am one of them; for me, social media is informative with groups like taobao shopping, hawkers united that offer good recommendations.
One eatery that constantly appeared on my feed was Fong Sheng Hao (豐盛號) and it's about time for me to pay its original branch, at Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ) Mall, a visit! I did some homework this time and a Google review of just 3.4 was of concern.
Signature Milk Tea - ours were sets and came with either coffee, black tea or milk tea (different pricing). While the menu shows the beverage in glass, what appeared in front of us were disposables, which kind of cheapen the dine-in experience. While the milk had a nice fragrance, it was diluted and lacked the richness I would have preferred from reputable bubble tea shops. p.s. Alex liked it though.
Frosting Toast Stick - this came with my Taiwanese braised pork rice set.
Hard and similar to those soda crackers sprinkled with sugar, albeit much thicker, with not much taste. This was, in my opinion of a person who tries not to take too much carbohydrate laden food, absolutely not worth the calories.
Most people would assume this would be one set. Correction; it's actually two mains. It's the Taiwan Special Pork Patty Charcoal Thick Toast and the Taiwanese Braised Rice (known generally as luroufan among the Chinese speaking).
Taiwan Special Pork Patty Charcoal Thick Toast - visually, it's really not as thick as one would have expected it to be after reading the text on the menu. But, there's always a but, the whole combination with the light mayo, the cheese, the meat and the moist, fluffy omelette, was delish!
There was this aromatic sweetness as my teeth sank into the soft toast, which was interestingly not that crisp. The pork patty wasn't your typical luncheon meat too; it was full of flavour but its thinness had resulted in many online complaints. The operator did attempt to clarify by citing research that this would be the best ratio etc but for many a consumers, it simply didn't make sense, especially when the picture on the menu had a thicker chunk of patty.
Taiwanese Braised Rice - luroufan is ranked second in the list of Taiwanese food I love, with stinky tofu being the first. Hence, I would make it a point to order if it is a signature dish for the eatery.
This version at Fong Sheng Hao was on the wet side although still very enjoyable with pickled cucumber that had a nice crunch soaked in vinegarish sweetness, rice drenched in saccharine braised sauce and tenderly soft pork belly that were roughly chopped up.
=====
Even though I wasn't happy with the milk tea and toast stick, the toast and the homely luroufan did appeal to me and I wouldn't mind having another meal there soon! Next time, I will likely check out its Westgate branch, which is nearer to my workplace!
