Takagi Ramen started operations back in year 2015 and back then, initial interest was more on its founders who were jailed for sedition due to articles published on a popular website, owned by them, by the name of The Real Singapore (TRS).
However, the stall eventually gained prominence for the affordable pricing on their Japanese ramen and in only about 6 years time, there are now 8 outlets around Singapore. Their latest location is right here in my hood at Chong Pang, just about a 6-minute walk away!
Decked out with two self-ordering kiosks, it might be a challenge for the older generation, who formed the bulk of population at this part of Yishun, to navigate. Nevertheless, I presume its target group would be the younger residents. Note: it's also operating 24 hours; not a draw for me since I wouldn't take such carbo-heavy meal late at night.
Interior decor as above; quite a fuss-free design with plastic shields separating each table due to COVID-19 safe management measures. The refreshing part was at the back.
Single diners can read the comic strips!
I didn't read so don't ask me about the storyline.
Waiting for our queue number to be displayed so that we can collect our food. Since it's self ordering and self collection, service charge wasn't imposed. All prices displayed are NETT as GST was also absorbed by Takagi Ramen.
Current promotion; you get one free noodle refill with every bowl of ramen purchased! While I love noodles, I am so not prepared to eat so much! Whatever the case, it's more bang for your buck!
Remember to take your cutleries and condiments when you collect your food.
Takagi Ramen Takoyaki Set - at S$11.80, this included free tea and I topped up S$1 for the onsen egg. The basic ramen would cost only S$6.90 a bowl. Compared that to ramen restaurants which would normally charge double the price for a bowl of ramen.
Nothing fantastic about the takoyaki; dense texture filled with batter and tasted that they had been laying at the counter for quite a while. Waste of calories.
Broth had a thick, milky consistency; hopeful factors for the taste but we were left disappointed. Said to be "boiled for over 12 hours", the flavour was rather bland. The two thinly sliced cha shu, described as being "braised and marinated over 12 hours" didn't improve the situation; taste was, simply put, weak.
Hakata noodles, sadly, didn't impress as well. Alex, more a noodle lover than I, literally left half his noodles untouched. Frankly, the best so far was the perfect onsen egg with its light soy sauce marination, that we paid S$1.00 for, per egg.
To be honest, I have had worse ramen and this was still edible. I would have discounted a bit here and there due to the pricing but on second thought, the cheapest ramen at Suparakki Ramen @ Northpoint cost a dollar more and tasted way better.
